Synopsis:
This edit takes the final two seasons and rearranges them to make the Night King and his army be the climax as it should have been. Tons of cuts and edits were made to try to save the characters from the awful writing and to keep their original arcs intact.

My main fixes were to:
- Remove the rushed Mad Daenerys arc
- Retain Jaime's character
- Give the Night King some substance
- Give Bran things to actually do
- Make Arya and Sansa not appear to be so stupid
- Remove the dumbing down of Tyrion and endless ball jokes
- Remove or tone down fast travel
- Remove all fakeout deaths, especially in the battle for Winterfell
And tons and tons of other small changes.
Intention:
Game of Thrones had one of the most disappointing finales I've ever seen. The story, the characters, the pacing, they got everything wrong. I wanted to be able to rewatch one of my favorite shows, but so much of it is meaningless with the original ending. While this edit isn't the Game of Thrones finale we deserve, I hope it satisfies anyone who wants to be able to rewatch the show without having such a disappointing end.

Editing Details:
I focused first and foremost on rearranging the seasons so that the Night King attack happens at the end. Then I tried to remove all character assassinations such as Jaime not caring about the innocent, Daenerys going mad all of a sudden, Jon reduced to only saying "she's muh queen". Then I worked at fixing smaller things like fast travel, fakeout deaths, and lots of poor character choices.
Cuts and Additions:
- Moved the Night King attack on Winterfell to the end, pushing the attack on King's Landing earlier
- Rearranged many, many scenes to make this main rearrangement work as well as to cut down on fast travel wherever I could
- Removed Dany going mad and burning everyone in King's Landing
- Jon and his army, and Arya and the Hound are never at King's Landing, and its destruction does not happen
- None of her army attacks the unarmed guards and civilians after they lay down their weapons
- Cersei no longer just sits around drinking wine and doing nothing. Her storyline is much better paced
- A lot less Euron. No finger in the bum!
- Euron does not shoot a dragon out of the sky and Dany does not forget about his fleet
- Cersei and Euron both die by dragonfire in the attack on King's Landing, rather than their original deaths
- Had to basically remove Varys and Littlefinger from the plotline sadly...
- Removed Arya and Sansa fighting and then tricking Littlefinger. He stays alive in this edit
- Took out all the dumb ball jokes from Tyrion
- Removed Arya finding her wolf again randomly
- Theon regaining his crew because he doesn't have a dick is removed. He now gets them back by willpower
- Removed the hunt for a wight beyond the Wall plotline. Repurposed it without that wight staying alive
- Bran now communicates with Jon via visions to have him go after the Night King beyond the Wall
- Everything that happens with the Night King now goes one after another very quickly
- The Night King lures Dany up to get her dragon
- The two episodes before the Battle for Winterfell are combined and removed a lot things like Arya sexing up Gendry
- Sansa is no longer fighting with Dany for no reason
- Removed all fakeout deaths at the Battle for Winterfell
- Less main characters on the frontline
- Rearranged the battle into two episodes to appear longer and for pacing
- Bran is revealed to be a part of the Night King. That's how the Night King can control the dead, using Bran's warging powers
- The Night King kills Arya and Bran warges into her body to deliver the final blow
- Removed basically everything that originally happened at the end. No Bran becoming king. No hitler Dany. No Jon killing Dany
- A lot more main character deaths to make the Night King feel like he was an actual threat
- New funeral scene with other characters' deaths added, and the unused song "Stay a Thousand Years" added
- Jon doesn't kill Dany. He now calls on the dragon to destroy the throne
- Ends with a montage of characters still alive, Sansa being crowned, and then Jon going beyond the Wall with Dany
- There are tons and tons of other minor changes to scenes for pacing, or to remove plotlines they are referring to because of the reordering,
or to remove characters from scenes that shouldn't be there, or to make small fixes for things I didn't like.

A huge amount of work went into this, considering the limited material and the obvious constraints. The editor pretty much achieves all the intended fixes in the narrative. For anyone wanting to rewatch the Show, this is simply much better than the original.

Episode 1 -- The narrative works very well.
Episode 2 – I think Euron Greyjoy is the worst-written character in the entire show (not so much in the books). He is the strongest, greatest, sassiest fighter and has the best ships and armada; and that’s it for his character. No nuance, no arc, no progression – nothing.
Also, the out-of-thin-air 1,000-ship strong armada Euron managed to build in just a few months, on islands that have no trees. I’m of the opinion that the less we see and hear about everything related to this magic armada, the better the show gets.
Episode 3 -- The narrative works well.
Episode 4 -- The cut at 05m04 creates a continuity error, as Jon Snow "teleports" from the beach to the top of the cliff. This could be fixed by inserting another scene in between.
Jorah Mormont seems to fast travel from Oldtown to Dragonstone, a trip that should take many months. We last see him at the end of Episode 3 in Oldtown, then he’s already at Dragonstone at the start of Episode 4.
The small scene at 30m12 could’ve been cut. It’s the magic fleet again, fast traveling to the opposite side of the continent while having to sail all around said continent. The ship-to-ship fire catapults also feel very anachronistic and "soft fantasy-ish" compared to the rest of the series, a medieval-like setting with a bit of magic. Euron Greyjoy also fast travels; we see him in King's Landing in the previous episode, the trip to Casterly Rock should take months. Maybe cutting from the line "there are supposed to be more than this" directly to the dying Lannister soldier (without showing the magic fleet) would fix it.
At 32m16, the line "your brother and his new queen..." is another example of Tyrion being outsmarted by everyone else, something that happens (for some "unknown" reason...) only in the last two seasons of the Show. If the goal is to "remove the dumbing down of Tyrion," this line could’ve been cut.
Episode 5 -- The starting scene, of Tyrion being scolded for his war strategy, is another example of the "dumbing down of Tyrion." It could be removed. This scene also lacks narrative consistency, considering that this same Episode ends with a very effective strategic decision from Tyrion.
At 13m30s, the cut creates a small continuity error related to Arya apparently changing her entire outfit. However, I don’t mind; this cut is ingenious and works very well narratively.
The transition at 20m18s is very noticeable due to both the audio and video cuts.
Episode 6 -- Starting at 13m37s, there a lot of consistency errors and weird cutting, because different scenes were stitched together. One thing is certain, the dialogue and narrative work just fine, this is an example of how the Show could’ve been made if it had better writers.
Very ingenious placement of the attack on King's Landing; it works surprisingly well. The boat attack also stitches together two very different scenes. It doesn’t always work (there’s just not enough material to work with), but it manages to fix the “Dany Kind of Forgot About the Iron Fleet” thing.
Also, great work in fully removing the Mad Daenerys arc.
Episode 7 -- There was a lot of editing to stitch everything together (the transitions were seamless), and an interesting variation in the narrative to "give Bran things to actually do." Quite a shrewd change. This was also a great way to narratively explain the Night King’s interest in making things happen the way they did and his plan to get through the Wall.
Episode 8 -- Really effective editing around the Jon Snow reveal; it highlights the final twist a lot better than the original. For me, this section was the highlight of all 11 episodes – the end result was impressive! The stated goal to "make Arya and Sansa not appear to be so stupid" was well executed.
Episode 9 -- I believe this Episode has the least amount of changes; the original one was also the best of the two seasons.
Episode 10 -- With all fakeout deaths removed, the Episode is a lot more interesting.
Episode 11 -- The audio cut at 22m38s felt out of place. The original audio transition worked much better.
Also, there’s a serious issue with this scene. The previous examples of recorded voiceovers for Bran were very well executed; contrary to those, here the added Bran dialogue is just terrible. The edited flashbacks work very well, so the (kinda childish) narration is not needed at all. The idea and the visual execution is flawless, so they effectively tip of the audience to the twist. The voiceover / narration just spoils it all. “Show, don’t tell”.
At 23m54s, I don’t get the reason for the added VFX blood, it adds nothing to the scene and it looks really fake. Also, the reveal at 29m23s (a great idea, actually) is much better without the previous fake blood.
The Epilogue was competently stitched together (with limited material to work with), I like it a lot.

almightycutie attempts to take Seasons 7 + 8 of GoT and turn it into one solid ending season by jettisoning all the material that didn't work. This means that much of S7 is left intact while much of S8 is cut, in particular all the bits that made previously clever and resourceful characters into plot devices. Tyrion is still smart, Sansa isn't so relentlessly bitchy, and Dany doesn't betray her core principles because she's not getting that Jon Snow D.
The key change is amazing in how well it works, so much so that it almost seems like it would be better if GRR Martin wrote it this way. AC flips the order of events to that Dany deals with her fight with Cersei first, then comes to aid the North in a final battle against the Night King. This reframing allows many characters who met certain fates to have different ones now that the Battle of Winterfell is the culmination of the story. AC does an impressive amount of additional effects-work to try to weave the structure of this together and to refocus the narrative in a believable way, and I think the majority of it works very well. I left in-depth comments on the edit's actual page: https://forums.fanedit.org/threads/game-of-thrones-complete-seasons-7-8-edit.19047/post-385712

Overall, there's nothing in this that screams "I Am a FaNEdit nOT thE ReAL thINg", so it's definitely a workable replacement for S7 and S8 of the actual show, if you're a fan. The narrative runs into some structural issues in the last few episodes though, and I think it needs a Version 2.0 to really give a satisfying ending to fans. Perhaps like the many Hobbit edits, this first GOT one will show the way and provide a platform to build off of and just get even better. It's an incredibly ambitious accomplishment, and I look forward to what AC does next!

There is some very impressive work in this edit, and the way the story plays out as one season works wonderfully. Technically, I saw no issues and this is a very strong work. If this had been the way the story had gone originally, I don't think there'd be as many complaints about it.

For me personally, the cracks start to show in the concept in the last few episodes. I love how the battle of King's Landing was handled, but there's a few moments that don't quite flow together right (Dany's costume change mid-flight stuck out to me right away.) Overall, that section is an improvement over the original show. There's some great effects work in the final Winterfell battle, and conceptually I like the idea of killing off some characters in that segment.

The moment in the throne room with Dany and Jon didn't quite work for me, though I like what the edit was trying to do with it. I just don't think the material was there to make that moment seem genuine.

Overall, this is definitely an improvement over the original version, and if some of those final moments could be made to work a little better, it might be the definitive version. For me, I don't know that there's a way to not make the end of this series disappointing given what we have to work with, but this is pretty close.

Great job, I enjoyed this a lot.

This is a very impressive project which recuts and reorders the final two seasons of Game of Thrones to provide a more satisfying narrative structure. While it is impossible to fix the poor writing from D&D, almightycutie has done an excellent job of cutting the weakest, most irrelevant subplots, re-ordering plotlines so that they play out in a more logical sequence, and re-purposing plotlines with interesting results. A very intelligent approach throughout and impressive effects added. The A/V cuts are also all well done.

Additionally, this does feel like a proper full season of Game of Thrones with good pacing, as opposed to the rushed feel of the original S7-8. The approach here was not to cram but rather highlight certain plotlines of more relevance and disregard those that added nothing or detracted. As a result, the remaining plotlines (which have been significantly altered in some cases) feel developed and coherent.

For me personally, this replaces the train wreck of the last two seasons in my mind; it's as if they never happened. Again, great job AC.

Any viewing of Game of Thrones should have this version, despite it's flaws it's miles better than the actual ending.
Fixing Daenerys is the thing that worked the best for me, this is essential for any Dany fan.
The thing I hated the most was having to watch scenes from seasons 7 and 8 lol, some things you just can't fix unfortunately.
The ADR made me laugh and some of the visual edits were awkward.
However this edit deserves all the respect for it's ambition and it's many improvements.

Huge thank you to almightycutie for trying to salvage something watchable out of this crime against humanity.

Wow… SO much to unpack here. First of all, I just want to say that this edit is sort of a dream come true. Like half the world, I was a loyal HBO GoT fan from the very first episode, and would be absolutely giddy for each subsequent season to release. Yes, I read all of the great GRRM books, but the series was different because we knew that each year it was going to continue our journey with this very large cast of amazing characters. The first six seasons rarely failed to impress. Sure, there were some uninspiring subplots and a few characters that didn’t lend much, but for the most part, those first six seasons really did their job well of bringing this ridiculously epic saga to life. Then came the final two seasons. S7, upon first watch, was certainly serviceable. Like its predecessors, it had some huge moments and, despite all the timeless jumping around and rushed plot devices, served to setup the highly anticipated final season. And that, my friends, is where the Titanic hit the iceberg. S8 was a disaster on just about every front. The showrunners, I believe, truly thought they had it all figured out, and some amazing footage was shot and some big set pieces were realized. But in this case, the sum ended up being far worse that the parts. Suddenly, the Night King and his army of the dead--the “Winter is Coming” doomsday promise that the entire series had been slowly building up to--took backseat and second fiddle to Iron Throne politics and the Cersei problem. What was supposed to be the culminating epic battle of the entire series ended up being a one-episode descent into very literal darkness that didn’t change the course of anything. Because, obviously, Queen Cersei and her glowering sneers of lustful revenge from the Red Keep’s balcony window was what everything for seven seasons really came down to, right? I mean, obviously, Daenerys Targaryen would drop everything that made her the freedom fighting, benevolent conqueror that she was and turn (on a dime) into Attila the Hun, right? And, obviously, Tyrion would turn into a clownish idiot, Jaime would throw away six years of hard-earned wisdom about what it means to have real honor, a much wiser Jon Snow would shrivel into a love-struck man puppet, etc., etc. Right? Wrong. So with S8 what we received was a broken narrative, shattered character arcs and a series payoff that was anything but.

Enter Game of Thrones: Redeemed. Almightycutie decided to meticulously “re-craft” the narrative that S8 so decisively destroyed, first and foremost by reordering the timeline of events. The biggest no-brainer of S8 that made it so terrible was that it placed the Battle of Winterfell, which would decide the fate of the entire GoT world and everyone in it, BEFORE the conflict with Cersei and the taking of King’s Landing. Redeemed immediately sets out to correct that by having Jon and Dany come to an early understanding that the Night King’s menace is the ultimate battle, but whereby Jon will focus his efforts on preemptive preparation for that coming nightmare while Dany quickly moves to take care of the Cersei problem. And that’s exactly how things progress. After forming a pact with Dany, Jon goes back North to rally his forces and to prepare an unassuming expedition north of the wall to scout ahead and potentially preemptively take out the Night King before his army can even get to the wall. Dany, meanwhile, focuses on her speedy strategy to take Casterly Rock before marching on King’s Landing without needing to use the devastation of her dragons. That, of course, fails (Cersei and Jaime for once outwit their smarter little brother) and Dany is then forced to expedite her incursion with the full force of her dragons (all three of them, mind you, as Euron never gets his lucky shot). With the “Wagon Train Battle” and all of the footage of the attack on King’s Landing, this reordering works beautifully, and Cersei Lannister even gets the justice she deserved to begin with (I won’t spoil it here… but it totally works). All of this happens within the first seven episodes of almightycutie’s Redeemed cut, which condenses the entirety of seasons 7 and 8 to a total of 11 episodes. The final four episodes are then dedicated to the final preparations leading up to the TRUE battle for Westeros, the Battle of Winterfell, which plays wonderfully over two episodes instead of just one. Amazingly, it all works, with a few minor exceptions, especially as we get to the final four episodes (I’ve bulleted some of those below).

Almightycutie even goes as far as to incorporate some of their own effects and voiceover. A couple of these were nearly seamless, while a few others not so much. Either way, they’re only used when absolutely needed (personally, I didn’t think Bran’s warging voiceover was necessary during Jon’s expedition north of the wall, but it didn’t detract, either). These “additional effects” moments are few and far between. However, I would say that if almightycutie ever decides to revisit their Redeemed cut, they could always improve some of these effects as the edit is almost six years old as I write this review. Newer AI post production software could really enhance and/or fix a few less-than-optimal effects shots.

With all of that said, the technical quality of Redeemed is a very strong 1080p presentation with a solid audio track for the most part. The only time I had difficulty with dialogue being mixed too low was during the expedition north of the wall (for some reason the dialogue between the Hound, Tormund, Dondarrion, et al, was mixed super low… probably to accentuate the added voiceover work for Bran’s character, which was also sort of mixed low and even garbled). Otherwise, top-notch Blu-ray quality presentation to go right along with HBO’s official S1-6 Blu-rays (I owned seasons 1-7 on Blu-ray… never bothered to purchase S8… and S7 went right to the Goodwill now that I have Redeemed). So re-watching the series with Redeemed serving as the final “season” is a seamless watch.

Many more good things can be said about this massive undertaking of an edit, but not everything is completely perfect. Nor would it be, considering what is available to work with. Some nitpicks, minor for the most part, include the following:

- For some reason, almightycutie decided to not include the demise of Littlefinger. I can sort of see the justification for this omission by questioning whether or not he actually deserved it (certainly, it felt like he did at the time). Either way, I’m fine with the decision to allow the Court Conniver to keep his throat intact. However, it does create a continuity error going forward as suddenly Peter Balish isn’t present for anything taking place at Winterfell after the fourth or fifth episode, prior to which he’s practically shadowing Sansa at every turn. Simply keeping to his original fate would have solved that problem.
- Cersei’s early destruction, though definitely the right choice and thoroughly satisfying, does leave a bit of a vacuum for Jaime’s continuing character arc from a dramatic perspective only if for the fact he now has no coda or reaction in regards to her death. This isn’t a huge deal (especially in light of Armageddon approaching), but it is something noticeably lacking. Of course, blame it on the GoT showrunners who should have had this option explored to begin with and should have given us a proper continued arc for Jaime Lannister, who should have never in a million years returned to his sister after she openly admitted to not caring about anything or anybody and letting the Seven Kingdoms fall to the forces of darkness if that’s what it would come down to (she’s just a more attractive version of the Mad King). At one point, Cersei even considers briefly having the Mountain take care of her brother for his disloyalty. Hers was as wretched, festering evil to the bitter end, and Redeemed goes a long way to correct how such a miserable state of affairs would have ultimately played out between the sibling lovers with at least one of them wanting to be a better person.
- With the entire subplot of the “kidnapped zombie” being omitted (in this version, the expedition north of the wall is NOT to find a zombie to bring it back to show Queen Cersei in order to garner her non-existent support), it now doesn’t give Jon Snow a concrete reason to actually go on the expedition. Now, with that said, it did sort of make sense that perhaps Jon was hoping to pull off a “Frodo and Sam unassumingly sneaking the one ring to Mordor” approach to a preemptive strike on the Night King, and so that’s how my own mind justified it. But it does leave a little to be desired as far as true character motivation. To their credit, almightycutie does attempt to pad the narrative further through a series of voiceovers by Bran as the Three-Eyed Raven. But even that sort of fell flat for me.
- And, of course, there are some visual continuity errors peppered throughout, especially in regards to Dany riding her dragon(s) during the siege on King’s Landing (mainly costume continuity and/or dragon continuity). There are a couple with Cersei, too. But, again, not a big deal in the grand scheme of the massive narrative correction.
- As an aside, some unintended reactions from characters due to certain recuts actually work better. For example, what was originally Dany’s insane, psychotic, tears-of-rage breakdown after razing all of King’s Landing along with its inhabitants, now works even better as her reaction for being forced to use her dragons on King’s Landing and to finally roast the Red Keep for good. They always say that editors can be directors after the fact, and this proves it.

I could go on an on about how momentous and important is this fan edit. Correcting the narrative of the final season of Game of Thrones was something I thought would be next to impossible, but almightycutie pulled it off. Having this edit on Blu-ray basically "fixes" the entire series for me, and allows me to revisit one of the greatest productions ever to grace the small screen. That's no small feat. Absolutely stellar work.

I am so impressed with this Game of Thrones edit. It took me a long time but House of the Dragon got me interested in Game of Thrones again and I had to set my mind that season 7 & 8 didn't exist for me to enjoy a rewatch. Then I found out about Game of Thrones Redeemed, I had to check it out, I didn't know how it could be redeemed but I was willing to give it a go.

Almightycutie has done an amazing job. Things I liked best.....Jon Snow is a strong character again and Tyrion isn't dumbed down, That the focus is more on the night king and the whitewalkers threat, swapping those battles around made it sooooo much better. Not wanting to spoil but I loved what happened in Kings Landing with Cersei, it felt kind of like poetic justice for us fans who were stuck seeing her stare out windows for 2 seasons.

The two outstanding things that bugged me in season 7 & 8 which pretty much made those seasons un rewatchable for me were the suicide squad going north to catch a wraith for Cersei (made no sense at all) and Euron killing a dragon. All fixed with this edit....YAY!

Pretty much all the stupid decisions and cringe moments are gone....YAY!

The end was maybe a little disjointed but I don't care....I loved it and with the material that was available Almightycutie did a darn fine job. This will make rewatching Game of Thrones a pleasure again, I couldn't rewatch for years because of those last 2 seasons and it was such a shame because the earlier seasons were so good. Thanks Almightycutie

I’m not going to repeat all the comments below, it’s been years since AC released this Fanedit so there’s no point going over old ground. I will agree though, the audio was a little wonky in places, so much so I went for Stereo instead of Dolby Digital.

So, AC’s work is faultless – It must have been a real slog to cut everything up and try to stitch it together. AC just had the given content so the change of clothes here and there must have been painful to use, but what choice did AC have? There are some scenes that chop really quickly, if it were me I’d have slowed the footage down a touch just to get that extras 2-3secs. **SPOILER ALERT** Dani in flying off in E11, slowing that down could have helped.

One thing I’d have changed, breakfast at Winterfell after party night ! Great use of Stay A Thousand Years, but there was no atmosphere. Personally I’d have added some wind, crackling fire sounds, people crying etc. It was an emotional scene but very flat with just the audio track. But I’d imagine by the time AC got to E11, there was no real creative energy left.

My biggest gripe, AC went too hard on brightening up Battle for Winterfell. For years people have moaned about that episode – I don’t get why. On my setup at home I can see it all perfectly without bumping up the brightness or contrast – AC tried SO hard that some of the winterfell buildings turned green. The original episode had me hanging off the end of my seat, I remember it perfectly – I made food and a hot drink at the beginning and by the end, the drink was cold and the food untouched. I really don’t get the ho-ha about that episode, it was the best thing I’ve ever seen on TV and probably ever will. It was perfect television.

AC went to a lot of effort with this edit, not just the chopping up but some imagery they made and special effects. The slight changes in Ramin’s music was great too, it was impressively executed.

Finally, the best part of S09 ? It’s made me fall in love with GOT again – I’ve not done a rewatch for 2-3yrs now, I just couldn’t.. but now I can and I have to thank AC for that
