Synopsis:
Ridley Scott's "The Last Duel" gives some interesting opportunities for editing work. Not only the narration is non-linear here, but we see some events from various points of view. So, what if we try to transform it to more linear narration, choose between those viewpoints along the way, or mix them together, to get a different take on this story?

Intention:
I've decided to try it as a sort of experimental quick project, to see how this story works presented in more traditional fashion.
Release Information:
Digital
Cuts and Additions:
- All scenes have been re-ordered chronologically
- if there was more than one version of a scene, one was selected
- in some cases, different versions were mixed with each other
- some scenes have been cut for better transitions or because they didn't fit very well with the choices made
- some non-essential scenes have been cut as well for better pacing
- created new color grade
- added new title card

Love the color grade, it makes the entire film feel real and more natural.

The chronologically order works wonders, here. The (spoilers..…) pivotal event, the rape, in particular, has a lot more impact like this, and that relevance gives a solid foundation for the rest of the film. The original film, even if it presented that scene in an ingenious way, had a more nebulous third act because of it.

The selection of the scenes that were included and excluded was perfect, the pacing was great.

Just noticed one editing issue: at 1h36m41, the audio gets too loud and then skips abruptly, just before cutting to the next scene.

Making this chronological was such a great editing choice! It removed so much repetition and really kept the story moving and moving. Two and a half hours feels just right for this movie, 3 hours was way too long.

I noticed a strange backwards audio sound at 1:36:41, but outside of that the edit is flawless. I really enjoyed the title card as well, I knew right off the bat that you had put it in but it is so good that it may as well have been part of the original.

I really appreciated how much character development you left in, and how clear the character motivations were based on your scene selections. It never felt overt or shoehorned, and by the end I was stressed for Marguerite, much more so than the original because I felt her story so much more clearly.

This edit has easily replaced the original for me, excellent work!

This is not really a movie I would have thought needed a fan edit. The theatrical cut is very well done, and in most cases, history has shown that Ridley Scott films benefit from a longer runtime. The structure in which the theatrical cut is told is very interesting. It reminded me a lot of Vantage Point where the audience is given separate accounts/versions of what took place. I think this was mostly effective but I did feel the film suffered pacing issues because of it. During each account new details are presented, but some of the events that are revisited only differ in minor details that really don't add much to the overall narrative of the story. That might be interesting for some, but for me, it made the runtime feel a little too long.

This edit solves that issue as there is one way any certain incident is presented. By doing this, the movie flows at a steady pace and the overall theme is still present while removing any feelings of being misled or manipulated which can sometimes result when multiple versions are shown to an audience for a given event.

Overall I really enjoyed this edit. The editing is all seamless and the color grading is a nice addition. If you are fan of this movie, I highly recommend the Chronological Cut.

Flawless edit, I enjoyed the theatrical cut and really loved the concept of the different p.o.v à la Snake Eyes. But what I didn't like was the third p.o.v pretentiously titled as THE truth. This edit does a very good job at streamlining the film into one single linear narrative, picking up from the different "truths", it's coherent and fluid, if you show it to someone who didn't saw the movie, they'll believe it's the original cut with no difficulties. But what really makes this chronological cut special, it's the gorgeous new color palette, no more of that goddamn modern blue filter that hides the beauty of the sets, the photography looks more natural and appealing, and it magnifies the judicial duel scene.
Very good edit, I highly recommend it.
