Synopsis:
Logan battles his primal paternal intuition as he makes his way through a dark fairy tale landscape filled with southern gothic grotesqueries. As his health fails him he finds himself operating on instincts he thought long lost, as if his destiny were already decided. As he passes into the realm of myth he finally realizes what he had been fighting for all those years.
Intention:
My intention was to bring the tone of Logan closer to that of the original trailer that featured Hurt by Johnny Cash. I also wanted to bring to the forefront the film's themes of art influencing life vs. life influencing art, and the determinism of fairy tales and myths. What resulted is a film much more immersed in its Southern Gothic stylings and focused more on atmosphere. The film has also been completely re-scored with Country and Folk music and some minor exposition and narrative elements have been reduced.

Fantastic way of watching this film, it works very well. The base, Logan Noir, looks great, and the rescore was not just well chosen but also not overdone.

The first action scene could have done with a touch up to make them less ridiculous. Overall, cuts were well done, largely unnoticable.

Added vo was very cool, again well chosen.

Technically speaking, only noticed a couple things: the cut off at 36:05 was a little abrupt, and the audio cut at 1:44:19 is noticable. Otherwise, flawless editing, the fade outs on the rescore were particularly well done.

Logan was initially a movie I liked, and admired, but didn't love. I appreciated a lot of its storytelling choices in terms of suggesting a backstory for the movie's status quo, and the emotional core that was missing from most of the FoX-Men movies, but it also seemed like it was trying a bit too hard to earn its Hard-R rating, overdoing it on the profanity and gore in a way that didn't make it feel of a piece with those other movies in the series. Plus, like the fan-editor, I liked the trailer better than the movie in large part down to the Johnny Cash music.

Most of my problems are rectified here, and with a great deal of care given to the music, which is selected with incredible care and precision, with some of the lyrics almost seeming too on-the-nose, but given that this is a movie where a clawed guy battling with his inner demons *literally* fights an evil version of himself, I don't think that's really much of a problem. The black-and-white works wonders to keep the constant showers of blood-and-guts from becoming overwhelming (I might be the one Kill Bill fan who preferred the B&W cut of the Crazy 88 sequence, for what it's worth).

My only qualms are ones that are structural to the movie, namely a somewhat saggy middle act with a pointless stop-over at a farmhouse that seems to just exist to kill off a bunch of characters, but aside from that, this edit has fixed a number of problems I had with the original film, I just would have preferred to see the pacing itself tightened up. Definitely a "B" elevated to an "A-" in my books; an edit I'll assuredly be revisiting in any (fan-edit-heavy) rewatch of the X-Films.

I had the pleasure of reviewing this edit for the Academy/IFDB.

An outstanding edit. Honestly one of the best I've seen. The rescoring is excellent, and I'm a sucker for Johnny Cash. I didn't have any problems with this movie initially, but after reading the cutlist I think the removal of Laura's dialogue and exposition was a good choice.

I recommend for everyone to check out this edit, and look forward to seeing what dannydangle will create in the future!

One of the greatest superhero films becomes greater. The black-and-white palette, and the light tweaks, but most especially the new. well-chosen and effectively deployed country and folk soundtrack emphasised the noir feel, existential questions and the story of larger story of loss, sacrifice and redemption to powerful effect. Wonderful.

A very cool experiment! For me, though, the musical additions were just not enough to say this is an "improvement" on the film, but it definitely is a fun alternate way to watch!

Personally I love the original Noir movie as is, so I was interested in what this brought to the table. Overall the music worked, but sometimes there were pieces of music that felt a bit off in my opinion. Sometimes the lyrics tell a similar story to what is going on in the movie when they eventually start, but sometimes the intro beats seemed too "happy" for the moment. Also, the normal sound effects are removed in place of the music, and that felt a little jarring too sometimes.

Otherwise, technical edits were solid, I did not notice anything but the musical additions. Great work otherwise!

Finally got round to watching this Last night. Very nice. Got a soft spot for Cash, but also the other inclusions tended to fit very well and were very contextually used - Night of the Hunter is prominent here too, although including it's narration is still 50/50 for me.
I used to generally like the superhero genre to whatever degree, but I'm sick to bloody death of them now. Couldn't care less. But Logan stands out among them as a very independent piece of self aware film making. Just quality contexts and well considered, emotionally & intellectually valid dialogue ect. - In this edit the best stuff is honored and some exposition is minimized. The shots that were cut, helped to tighten things up and I did not miss them. The musical inclusions actually heightened it's already visceral qualities, as the songs chosen are very apt - sure there are a couple of musical cues that came in a little early, a little quiet, or hung on a tad too long maybe, but that's the fan editor in me - It's hard to just sit and be a punter sometimes. The timing of the new material is generally very good and is always well considered. Overall this edit felt seamless and the B&W grading was usually quite punchy which I like. I would recommend for sure.

The B+W cinematography (from Logan Noir) plus the country/folk rescoring has transformed this fanedit of Logan into a completely new experience. Despite a couple of music cues that seem (to me) a bit 'off' (mostly a couple of cues that start a bit too early or require a bit more work on the transitions), on the whole, there are some instances where the music elevates the content to achieve a transcendent quality that completely 'nails' dannydangle's vision of a 'gothic logan tale'. All his omissions are welcome as well, as some of the expository material was too 'on the nose,' while other judicious cuts improved the sense of restraint and minimalism.

An atmospheric, ethereal experience. Highly recommended.

For me, Logan is one of the best "superhero" movies ever made, but it had a few flaws, especially in the last act of the movie which felt made to please the action-seeking viewers and contrasted greatly with the generally more paused tone of the movie. In this regard, the official noir version of the movie improved the tone and made the movie even grittier, providing a better experience (even when leaving the whole movie uncut).

Dannydangle's Logan Gothic continues to perfect the movie by improving the general atmosphere with a complete reworked soundtrack that perfectly fits the atmosphere of the movie, giving it more depth and making it more enjoyable. Furthermore, the trimmed parts are really well chosen, to the point that this time, together with the music, I didn't notice the off-putting last act (even if only 4 minutes were cut).

Audio/Video Quality - 10
I am no expert in this matter, but the quality was really good. Nothing to complain.

Visual Editing - 10
Kept to a minimum, but perfectly chosen and totally unnoticeable. It definitely improves the movie.

Audio Editing - 9
Overall the music is really well chosen, but sometimes there were pieces of music that felt a bit off in my opinion. This happens very few times and for most of the time the selection of new tracks is perfect.

Narrative - 10
The few cuts and the new score contribute to create the perfect atmosphere to the movie and giving some scenes more "feeling" that without any doubt contributes to the narrative.

Enjoyment - 10
I really enjoy re-watching the movie and the clever choice of music tracks. I definitely recommend it.
