Synopsis:
A woman angry at the world is forced to care when she begins to see past the surface. Cassie didn't ask for any of this, but must decide to let those around her die, or to risk vulnerability and stop a killer.
Intention:
Its another garbage movie, I admit I watched it initially on streaming just to see the train wreck. But halfway through it, I found some fun in how much they were leaning into this kind of camp. Dakota Johnson's Cassie character is kinda hilarious the way Dakota plays her, so I wanted to focus on her POV, and whittle down the rest of the offensively bad parts of the movie as thin as possible.
Additional Notes:
This feels like another bad superhero movie from the early 2000s, so I treated it as such - a new intro credits uses new graphics and text more reminiscent of that time. We also removed the graphic end credits and cut right to the credits scroll. Now, as for where this fits into the Marvel Multiverse... it clearly is another universe or version of Earth. But the "Marvel What If..." series feels so different, that calling it a "What If" story doesn't feel right to me. So I am taking a chance at offending both Marvel and DC fans, but i am calling this a "Marvel Elseworlds Origin Story". Kinda connected in an "alternate universe" way in case these characters pop up in anything else, but far enough away to be its weird thing far away.
Special Thanks:
GarStazi was crucial to adding a second round of polishing that truly pushed this edit to be its best possible. Great ideas and criticisms, and this edit is extremely better for their contributions. Thank you!!!

That intro scene in the Amazon is so forced, and shows us everything we see in Cassie's later flashback. So that is gone completely. We let those details be slowly discovered by Cassie herself naturally throughout the film.

Ezekiel's ADR was just SO bad, it is distracting. So I addressed that first. Dialogue is trimmed so the worst ADR parts are cut, and the rest is manipulated to reduce his over-exposition. The spidersuits vision that never pays off. Now we never see the spidergirls except for a very quick shot of them kicking Ezekiel out his window in his dream. All the rest are scrubbed.

The significance of the neon "S" never pays off either, so that is trimmed.

Overall dialogue pacing is atrocious in this movie, so that was also addressed when possible.

Oh man the girls dancing on the table. That part is just SO BAD. I was able to trim most of the lead up to that. Cassie still finds them on the table but now we don't see them meeting the boys, discussing the song, getting Anya to join, all gone. Not its just Cassie's POV.

Another thing that annoyed me was Cassie's lines that were easter eggs to Ben's future death - they felt almost mean. So Cassie also no longer jokes about Ben getting shot in Queens, (thats of course how he dies) or that being and Uncle will bear later responsibility (that his sister will die forcing him to look after Peter). And so many little cringe things - like Cassie's cpr patient just "getting up and walking away"... that was so weird. I tried to look up all the plot issues and address as many as I could.

Finally, that epilogue was just ridiculous. Gone.

This edit removed a lot of bad shots, almost all of the Dutch angles, a lot of the ADR bits (which have to be some of the worst Automated Dialogue Replacement lines of any film ever) and trimmed / removed most of the egregious sections.
It actually turns an awful film into a much more bearable one. Impressive work!

The intro is much better. Removing this entire section that just gets repeated later (in the original) makes for a better narrative flow. What were the original director + editor thinking?…
Many of the awfully delivered Cassie lines were removed, like the “what are you even doing over there?” bit. The more Dakota Johnson cringe lines the edit takes away, the better the film becomes.

To make the Ezekiel’s dream scene bearable, 95% of it had to be cut; the original film’s dream is awful. And in this edit, it becomes a bit cryptic for the audience, we just watch a snippet of what Ezekiel experiences.

The Ezekiel / Cassie dream-vision-discussion was tightened and is now much easier to watch. The original is a sound and visual FX monstrosity, and includes dozens of cuts trying to hide the huge amount of ADR.
Also, was Dakota Johnson sarcastically reading the (original, now-removed) line “The girls? The girls have powers… In the future?” or was she actually acting?

The diner scenes were trimmed very effectively. The original “girls dancing on the table” bit was just cringe and so hard to watch. Also, Sydney Sweeney’s character Julia is just so… bad, the less we see her, the better.
The new placement for “Us strays need to stick together” just at the end… It works, well done.

Side note: This is probably unfixable, but the final section is utterly ridiculous. Why are there fireworks coming from random directions, instead of just from below? And do the filmmakers really think that fireworks work like RPGs or missiles?

The infamous “I was” section at 01h20m14 was ingeniously edited, in order to remove the godawful digital zoom-in.
In my personal opinion, the “I was” should be fully removed, it makes no narrative logic. The line “But the girls were never your future” is more than enough. With the “I was” is removed, the story makes more sense; Ezekiel’s future is simply to die (because of the spider curse, or something like that). It’s not about either Cassie or the girls. He will die because he’s “destined” to it, and what he does throughout the film only hastens his own demise. We see him fall to his death just after this, mimicking his dream.

When Santiago is explaining things to Cassie, at 1h05m47, I really think this section could be shortened even more. It’s now better than the original, for sure, but Santiago still has about 5 lines and 3 of them include the word “future”. Also, I think the line “Great power will come” makes no sense, narratively. Cassie has “awoken” her powers and she was just able to experience the Past (and maybe interact a bit with it…); how much more “power” is Santiago still expecting her to acquire? This is it; the majority of her powers should now be available to her.

Small issues:
- at 1h20m10, when it cuts to Cassie’s face, a “click” sound is audible
- because of how the section was edited, we hear the same sound FX (the sound of the flying fireworks) at 1h20m12 and at 1h20m15

Disclaimer: I’ve previewed 2 earlier versions of this edit and I’m named in the “Special Thanks” section, but this has not distorted my Review.

This edit made the movie watchable even rewatchable. Whereas the theatrical cut, I don't think I'm ever gonna watch it again.

I avoided the theatrical cut because I'd only heard horror stories from everyone of how compromised this film was by studio meddling. Having never seen the original cut, I can't comment on how big an improvement this is upon that version, but I can say that I found myself pleasantly surprised by how much I was enjoying myself watching it, no doubt helped thanks to Wakeupkeo's ample edits of the film's most cringe-worthy moments. That said, I did find myself quickly losing interest in any of these characters the longer it went on, I can only imagine how much I would've checked out had I been watching a cut that was nearly half an hour longer.
