Synopsis:
Do you want to watch "The Mist" but don't want to have to see THAT ending? Do you wish Billy didn't even exist at all so that he would never have to live through the events of this movie? Are you a Dad? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, this is the version of The Mist for you. Through painstaking effort and hundreds of cuts, reordered events, AI altered images, and more, eight-year-old Billy has been removed from the narrative. And don't worry, the ending is still extremely bleak... Enjoy!

As a parent, I really struggle to watch little kids go through horrific things. Horror that used to interest me now just gives me nightmares about my own children. So I decided to make an edit of one of my favorite monster movies that I could watch guilt-free!

So, did the editor achieved the end goal of fully removing Billy? Absolutely. Not only through extensive audio and video editing, but also by using AI. Impressive!

The new ending is a great improvement over the original. I mean, seriously, the US military appears and the mist goes away? A bit on the nose…
The new ending keeps the tone similar to the rest of the film, and makes much more sense.

One thing I would have preferred here would be a lot less CGI monsters. My personal taste, of course. But both in the original and in this edit, I’ve felt the huge amount of CGI after the first act partially ruins the suspense and the uneasiness (both work great at the beginning because we see almost no “CGI monster shots”). My ideal edit for this film would try to replicate the first act's suspense for as long as possible. An example: the creepy baby spiders’ scene (my favorite section of the film) would work even better if we hadn’t already watched the many CGI flying bugs before. Or the many CGI adult spiders.

You make a great point about the overly explicit monsters! I wish there was a way to make it more of a slow burn nightmare "dragged into the mist to your death" kind of thing but on the other hand I feel like monster movies with genuinely scary reveals are so rare that I really like seeing them. Tough choice! Thank you for the review garstazi, that's really nice of you to leave one!

Well done Jason!
You brilliantly edited Billy out of the film.
Not an easy task but you nailed it.

Audio and video is topp of the class.
I haven't watched the original version for years and really couldn't tell what scenes were missing besides the shots of Billy in this cut.
But reading you cut out 30min and I surely didn't miss those scenes, so seamless editing overall.

Do I prefer this version over the original? No.
But it will still get 10 in narrative and enjoyment because this edit is so well done.

I get the dad friendly aspect as I'm a father myself of two kids.
It's really hard to watch kids getting hurt but that is why I still prefer the original version.
The original hits you like a brick wall of pain with it's very bleak ending and I had nightmares after watching this film for the first time.

This edit won't give my such nightmares but it gave me more reasons to check out more edits by JasonFlippy.

I recommend this!

Absolutely brilliant! This is the B-movie midnight TV flick version. Billy was a necessary addition to elevate this largely one dimensional screenplay to the big screen. On first viewing his fate was hard-hitting, and added no end to 'The Mists' theme of the looming indifference of apocalyptic disasters, yet became a disturbing bug-bear in a film with more than enough literal bug-bears already to be disturbed by. This plays so much better at home now.

Of note is the enhancement of the love interest, and the neighbour's attitude is now acceptable. He actually looks quite badass now instead of stiffass considering his distrust of the father seemed obtuse yet now suspicion towards the husband flirting with the housewife may be deemed perfectly reasonable. The ending hits-home in a less harrowing way at the same time as now being totally hopeless. Jason Flippy is barking up the right tree with his use of AI too. Cheers!
