8 minutes
Synopsis:
This edit depicts the events of Pulp Fiction in chronological order. To achieve one continuous timeline, temporal redundancies had to be avoided by merging those scenes together. The movie now structures as follows: Butch's childhood memories - Title sequence - The Bonnie Situation - Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace's Wife - The Gold Watch - Credits.
Intention:
Since I'm a huge fan of Tarantino and Pulp Fiction in particular, I wanted to find out how it would alter the feeling of the movie and the overall pacing of the story, if the events were told chronologically. This edit is to be seen as an experiment and - by no means - tries to be an improvement over the original.
Release Information:
Digital
Editing Details:
In the original movie, there are two major cases of overlapping time. The fist occurs during the opening prologue, where Honeybunny and Pumpkin talk about robbing the diner. But while they are talking, Jules and Vincent are actually sitting only two tables away eating breakfast - which is the final scene of the original movie. The second one takes place while Jules and Vincent visit the hotel room to get the briefcase. After they shot Brett early in the movie, the scene fades out. Near the end of the film, the same scene is revisited just before Brett gets killed and introduces a guy with a gun hiding in the bathroom. So most work was done on these redundant scenes, to merge them each into one respectively.
Cuts and Additions:
- Cut Honeybunny's freeze frame
- Cut some parts of Jules quoting the Bible
- Cut the "first" shooting of Brett

Pulp Fiction: The Chronological Edit is one that I watched out of curiosity. I think every Tarantino fan has pondered at one time or another what his movies would be like if they followed a linear timeline, and this was a good way to see that "what if" played out. Does it beat the original? No, and the editor has admitted this. Is it worth it? Yes!

The most interesting aspect of this edit is that the focus is on Butch instead of Jules. So if your favorite story of the three was The Gold Watch, I think you'll love this edit! Personally, I'm the opposite. The Gold Watch is my least favorite of the three, but not because it's bad. I just like the other two stories better. Speaking of which, The Bonnie Situation is placed at the beginning of the film instead of the end. That alone is why the original is the more ingenious version of the film.

My criticisms aside, nobody is watching this edit because they're expecting an improvement. This edit is one you watch out of interest than on whether it's an improvement. I was interested, and I stayed interested all the way to the credits. I don't expect to see it again, but I'm glad I saw it, and I have a newfound appreciation for all things Tarantino as a result of watching this. If you're a fan of Pulp Fiction like me, I see little reason to skip this one. Check it out when you have nothing else to do for two and a half hours!

I love all of Tarantino's films, some more than others, but PF would def be in the top 2 or 3 of my favorites (depending on my mood). I also love checking out different edits for all of his films just to see someone else's take on Tarantino's vision. nAsA's Chronological Edit takes Tarantino's film and puts it "back in order". After watching this film over and over for 25 years, it makes for a VERY interesting watch. While I don't think I will be watching this edit again any time soon, it is DEFINITELY worth checking out at least once, just to see how the movie plays out a bit differently.
