Synopsis:
David Twohy's Pitch Black repositioned as a "Riddick" movie, with some small changes to get the most out of the director's cut, while restoring some of the momentum from the theatrical cut. This is a very light edit.
Intention:
After spending a lot of time working on Riddick (2013), I thought it would be interesting to touch all of the films released so far, and I was itching to see Pitch Black on bluray, so that was the next stop. The movie is nearly perfect in my opinion, but there are some really minor things that have always bothered me (ship spinning during landing, some of the heavily skewed shots, hearing the ship whoosh by at the end, etc.).
Special Thanks:
INIGHTMARES for brainstorming with me on how to handle the title sequence.
Release Information:

Cuts and Additions:
* Recreated opening credits, and included discrete credits for Twohy and Diesel this time.
* Changed title.
* Adjusted most of the flash frames in the opening sequence. In the second part of the scene, we see blue flashes that are clearly from a practical source on set. Two of the flashes on Riddick are likewise from a real light source. All others appear to have been added in post. Several are single white frames. I do not have epilepsy, but this sequence has always made me feel a bit queasy. I've retained all of the flashes, but I've recreated them to look more like the blue practical light.
* Removed overhead VFX shot of the Hunter-Gratzner spinning. When the ship enters the atmosphere, one of the air brakes snaps off, which introduces a spin. The exterior VFX shot shows the ship spinning very fast. The landing sequence is already nearly unbelievable, but this particular shot has always bothered me since they don't seem to be reacting to the spin inside the ship.
* Removed Owens yelling, "What the fsck is going on up there!?" after the glass breaks. His tone and delivery is incongruous with the previous scene where he's encouraging Fry to keep trying.
* Removed the skewed shots of Fry after the glass breaks. Note: The skewed shot is an interesting affectation that works well in this movie (in my opinion), but in this opening shot it feels too much like "the man behind the camera". Contrast to the shot of Fry underground when she sees the creatures. Here, it emphasizes her disorientation, and the shot doesn't draw attention to itself.
* Removed the shot of Owen's chair flying through the air during the crash, since it's clearly loaded with a dummy.
* Removed the "stick out a thumb" scene from the DC, since it feels like an exposition dump.
* Moved Jack finding the hair clippers to just after the scene where we see the water condenser start to work, and changed the audio so it sounds like Jack is in the building off to the side.
* Removed the sandcat driving under and through the bones as they head back to the crash site. I love this moment between Jack and Riddick (Riddick pointing at the bones and Jack ducking at the last moment), but this sequence includes a shot that clearly shows the sandcat loaded with stunt doubles, and I'm positive the guy doubling Vin Diesel look straight at the camera). To remove that shot, I need to remove the entire sequence for continuity.
* Removed Riddick saying, "Did not know who it was fscking with." after snapping the creature's neck.
* Removed Riddick smashing his lights at the end, when he's about to steal the skiff. I think it's a metaphor, but it feels a bit too on the nose for me.
* Removed the second "Not for me..." near the end. This bit was improvised by Vin, and I can't imagine the movie without it, but I think it's more poignant if he only says it once (quietly), and in response all he gets back is the sound of the rain.
* Removed the sound of the skiff flying through space after they break orbit. This movie was very brave in keeping the ship silent in the opening scene (in keeping with the unpopular no-sound-in-space rule), but they ruined it with the skiff whooshing by us at the end. I've kept some sound here, but it's very quiet, and very low frequency.

This isn't a lengthy review, because it doesn't need to be.

If you liked Pitch Black, you'll love this edit. Tighter focus on Riddick and his journey, and the edit benefits from this greatly. Riddick was always the most interesting character here, and centering him in the narrative makes total sense.

It also highlights the relationship between him and Johns, which I felt was sidelined a bit in the original.

Edits were seamless, so much so that I didn't even notice most of them until I was reflecting afterwards.

Great edit, would recommend.
