Synopsis:
Enjoy the Christmas spirit with a fanedit of the modern movie adaptation of the beloved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl! Faneditor theryaney has made a few changes to this family movie that includes a lengthy colour-correction of the film that portrays snow more realistically, the removal of Willy Wonka's flashbacks and the entire subplot involving his childhood, and also an ending closer to the original book.
Intention:
My main intention was to cut the one thing that annoyed me the most about this movie, which was the whole subplot with little Willy Wonka and Dr. Wonka. I then thought how I could expand my edit and decided to do a colour-correction of the blue snow and other scenes that looked really unrealistic. I didn't do anymore edits because as a kid I really loved this movie and it has a special place in my heart so I'm not going to touch it further.
Other Sources:
Danny Elfman's score for this movie (Track 'Finale")
Special Thanks:
Mr.Lovebucket for inspiration through his Book Cut Edition
Release Information:
Digital
Editing Details:
Used Final Cut Pro X 10.4.4's white balancing tool to colour correct the scenes.
Cuts and Additions:
- Added fanedit.org intro
- Added "A fanedit by theryaney" to the opening credits and added title card below Christopher Lee and Blair Dunlop saying "(Excluded)" to fit with the edits made
- Colour corrected every outdoor scene so the horrible blue snow is now white.
- Also colour corrected some of the Buckets' home if it looks too blue to my eyes.
- Colour corrected scenes of the toothpaste factory
- Colour corrected the scene in the Salts' home
- Removed all of Willy Wonka's flashbacks and him being incapable of saying "parents"
- Colour corrected the Television Room.
- New ending inspired by Mr.Lovebucket's Book Cut Edition, and added the track "Finale" from the soundtrack to cover up the transition
- The narrator is also removed, and covered up using the previously mentioned "Finale" track.
- Added "The End" title card
- Added "A fanedit by Theryaney" credit

I love this version of charlie and the chocolate factory. It's very different in some aspects to the 1960s version, but also had its own fun elements added to make itself stand out from the other version. While I liked most including the childhood stuff, I believe this fan edit does a great job at setting out to remove the childhood parts and the one line that made no sense.
"Absolutely not" Wonka said when Charlie asked if he could bring his family.
It's dumb and it being removed improves the film by a long shot for various reasons.
Again the childhood stuff is gone, but again the edit doesn't do much else to change the film.
Despite that, the editing is top-notch and makes itself a great improvement on the source material.
However, It's the same 2005 Wonka film just improved at the end of the day.
If you hate the 2005 Wonka, you might like that they removed the childhood stuff and not much else.
If you love this film, you will love this fanedit as I did.

This fan edit is pretty straight forward really. It cuts out the distracting scenes of Wonka's childhood, which helps enormously with the pacing. The problem with the theatrical release is that it's probably is more suited to the title "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" than the original 1971 release as it's all about Johnny Depp's character rather than Charlie. I think it's actually impossible to make Charlie a more central character to Wonka as the camera and narrative is glued to him. It's definitely the "Johnny Depp Wonka Show" and no editing can really change that much.
I'm so glad that the "absolutely not" line has been removed on when Charlie has just won and asks Wonka if his family can come. I found that line too cold for Wonka really and I never did like the whole backstory anyway, so again, I'm glad it's cut out.
I obviously wish there was a way to cut out all of the horrid songs (god, they're awful), but it's an impossible task as they hold the scenes together with how the narrative plays out. You can't even cut the cheesy puppet scene on Wonka's introduction as there's no other way to introduce Wonka. You can't do too much with the film at all really. But you got rid of the padding and that was good enough.
If I was ever to watch this film again then this would definitely be my way to watch it. The editing itself is amazing. It's professionally made and executed well. Congrats with it!

This was an excellent way to attempt to stay true to the book and make it less about Wonka and more about Charlie. I am glad to see the subplot eliminated and the film focus more on the book's elements. Great job!

I was never a big fan of Burton/Depp version, prefer Gene Wilder's version (RIP)
Now, when it comes to this edit, I agree with the previous reviewer, I much prefer this more than the theatrical cut! Hats to theryaney!
