Original Release Date:
2006
Original Running Time:
125 minutes
Fanedit Release Date:
Fanedit Running Time:
95 minutes
Time Cut:
30 minutes
Synopsis:
This version of SILENT HILL is more akin to the video game horror series that inspired it. An improvement.
Intention:
To develop a better version that was more akin to the video game horror series that inspired it.
Release Information:
DVD
Cuts and Additions:
Cuts: No Christopher character
Yeah, kind of a “no duh” idea – frankly, this character had absolutely no purpose in the film to begin with, so he’s gone (just like in the other SH edits).

Changes: Flashbacks/Exposition is kept to a minimum
Only included the ‘Flashback’ sequence that Rose sees when she enters the Red God’s Room (and even that has several edits and cuts to it). Any other flashback not related to this sequence is removed from the film.

Changes: Allessa, the witch
Tried to make the Allessa character a much more ambiguous figure than she was in the original film.

Cuts/Changes: The Townspeople
Made the cult/townspeople and their actions against Allessa/Sharon much more ambiguous and less judgemental (they are no longer strictly ‘evil’).

Cuts/Changes: Dark Allessa = the Red God
In the film, it’s never really specified who this character is, except it calls itself the ‘dark part’ of Allessa and seems to have a Devil undertone (which isn’t that clever of an idea, in my opinion). In the games, one of the things I liked in the series mythology was the idea that there were various “gods” that existed in the land of Silent Hill, where their purpose was to lead the people faith to the true God. In this version of the story, this character is now one of those gods.

Changes: Dark Allessa’s voice
The voice of this character/creature has been dubbed/altered so that when it speaks there are several different voices merging as one (that idea came from another game “Shadow of the Colossus”, where the God’s voice had several different people speaking together as one).

Cut/Change: Ending
The film now ends without Rose & Sharon returning back to Christopher and their home (no ‘land of ghosts’ ending).

Additional Cuts/Edits
- Removed some of the more cheesy/overdramatic speeches of several characters
- Removed several obvious greenscreen footage
- Removed many of the ‘close-up’ shots of the creatures in order to increase the suspense and tension of the horror scenes

It seems as though I may have seen a different edit than white43, because my experience was completely different. I will start off by saying that my DVD copy came directly from the faneditor, so I know I didnt have a bad burn or anything. Also I want to state that while I have a copy of the original, I have yet to watch it. If the edit sounds promising, I try to watch it before the theatrical version so I am not spoiled as much.

video: 6/10 – This seemed like a poor encode. The blacks were noticeably pixelated and light, and the letterboxing was really noisy. Distracting at times.

audio: 2/10 – While I didn’t notice any hard cuts, the audio needed a lot of work still. As I mentioned above, I have not gotten around to watching the original yet, so my first complaint may be present in the original (needs attention though). The score was really loud choppy and overbearing. It seemed chaotic and overpowered the film. Again this may be in the original, but it was quite distracting. Also about 25 minutes into the movie the audio went out of sync. It was quite noticeable and I am amazed that no one else commented on it. It was distracting enough that I had to turn the DVD off.

entertainment: 1/10 – The beginning of the film really makes no sense if you are not completely familiar with the original or the video game. Its really jumpy and poorly set up. The original may be like that, but fanedit or original, it certainly doesnt make for a good movie. Between the poorly mixed score, the jumpy beginning, and sync issues I had to shut the DVD off. I know JasonN has gotten some very nice reviews for his work, so I was looking forward to this. However I was really disappointed. It will be hard for me to get the courage to pop in the original DVD now.

I do recommend that the editor take another look at this. The technical problems (primarily the audio sync) really needs to be addressed.

overall rating: 3/10. Not recommended
