Synopsis:
The origin of the world's first Bionic Man is revealed!

Intention:
Back in 2012, when I was still a newbie editor, I made a series of fan edits based on my all time favourite childhood television series THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. In the end, I made seven entries in my rechristened CYBORG series. And while none of them were perfect, I am still generally happy with most of them. All except for one. The first one. CYBORG The Retro-Con Cut.
Being it was my first time ever working with Interlaced Television Material, I made a few mistakes in converting the episodes to MP4 format for editing. The Aspect Ratio is slightly incorrect and the file was not fully Progressive. Plus, there were some minor narrative and visual choices that I am now not entirely satisfied with.
So with this being the 50th Anniversary of TSMDM, and Shout Factory releasing the series on Blu Ray this past year, it seemed like the perfect time to go back and Rebuild this edit. Make it Faster. Stronger. Better than it was before.

It has taken me way too long to finally sit down and watch this edit, but boy oh boy it was worth the wait! For context, I have not seen any of his original Cyborg edits (though I'm happy to check them out).
Within the last several months, Bob has motivated me to watch the Six Million Dollar Man. I purchased the DVD sets of the series as well as The Bionic Woman. I anxiously watched all of the initial TV movies plus the first few episodes. Other things pulled me away for a period, but before I dove back into the show I figured it would be a good time to review things and I watched this edit. Well, THIS was the absolute best way to be introduced to the series. The flashbacks all make sense and are timed well within the context of the story. The first episode of the series, which I found to be fine was now elevated and the stakes felt higher as we watch our hero find his place in the world as the Bionic Man. The climax of the movie actually had me in suspense and ready to cheer as Steve Austin embraced and became the hero we all know and love.
This was a solid edit! Every adjustment was seamless, the choice in episodes worked to perfection and my enjoyment was worth six million dollars.
My ONLY gripe.....I NEED more Bionic Man movie edits from Bob!

This is the pilot episode I always wished for !
Those 3 pilot movies, I've never been able to sit through in their entirety without falling asleep and that first episode, while not bad by any means, never really felt like a pilot.
Something was missing, this isn't the case anymore.
The flashback bits added to the episode do fit very well with the story, are quite well inserted in very appropriate places, invest you more in the watching. The story feels much more rich and deep than the original. It makes for a superb introduction to the character of Steve Austin, avoiding the continuity problems with the changes of cast (Oscar Goldman was there from day 1) and the added sound effects kinda missing from the first season are really an added bonus and greatly improve the six million dollar feeling.
Thanks again BionicBob, this one was 110% tailor made !

what can i say that hasn't already been said? Lee Majors as Colonel Steve Austin, along with his friend and sometimes boss Oscar Goldman at it again. I wish it was easy to go back to the days when this show first aired and watch the show all over again.....Wait, I can thanks to BionicBob and his redux of his previous fanedits. Watching this made me feel like a kid again instead of an old grumpy grandpa, which i am lol. Anybody who reads this please take 80 mins out of your day and watch this and feel like a kid again. Use your imagination to think back to a time before the advances in prosthetics that we currently have and imagine if we could take futuristic style technology and rebuild a man like Steve Austin and what someone like him could accomplish today.

Wow is it 1973 and am I 12 years old watching a cool new TV show? No it's 50 years later but in my mind and feeling as I watched this edit, yes it was 1973 again. Watching this and seeing all the great character actors of the era. And when I saw Don porter I half expected Sally Field to enter with her surfboard. Or his nurse love interest who was on Ironside and in a quick flashback to see Laura Parker from Dark Shaods. As I watched I sat here saying to myself when is Steve gonna do this or that? And when he did a sly smile came across me. I also looked at this as an adult and saw all the cheese that entertained me as a child. And a Cyborg for only six million? Too cheap....lol. A fun edit to watch and on my personal popcorn scale this gets a 7 out if 5.

Many a child of the 70s & 80s has fond memories of the Six Million Dollar Man and this edit really hit the spot for me. This clever bit of retconning by BionicBob manages to salvage most of what worked about the original TV movie and merge it with what the show later became. My only quibble is that Darren McGavin's wonderfully nasty Oliver Spencer couldn't be included in some way, but I understand that the intention of the edit was to replace him with the far warmer and cuddler Oscar Goldman. Absolutely recommend this edit to any fans of the old show. It was a pleasure to watch and brought back fond memories of my childhood.
