This Review is for the version (v5) with both the Goblin fight and the full dance scene (I really like the dance, it gives “The Mask” vibes and that fits with the Venom suit).
I love the big editing changes with Pete and MJ’s relationship. Overall, it makes so much more narrative sense for things to happen the way they do in this edit. The original film was just all over the place and had serious editing and pacing issues. Well done!
(The original film implies that black shirt and suit = douchebag, which I find pretty funny)
The character of Sandman is also improved. Removing the weird retcon about him and Uncle Ben was a big help. The big reordering of the narrative works surprisingly well. And pretty much all of the cuts are seamless.
At 0h19m06, the new placement of the “you knew this was coming” works well narratively, but it feels a bit off because the buildings in the background create a tiny continuity error (not major, but it’s noticeable). This was improved by the editor in the newest version, though.
(James Franco has terrible line deliveries this entire film…)
I’m not a fan of the shot with the flag in the background at 1h41m54 (it makes me think of Captain America, which breaks my suspension of disbelief); but this is a superhero film, it’s not that much of an issue.
Although I like the end scene (it’s cute), in terms of the narrative it messes some things up. It’s already heavily implied that Peter and MJ will end up together again, there’s no need to show it directly (and it should take a bit longer to happen). Also, the funeral works as a great epilogue scene, and the shot with Peter alone looking at Harry’s grave would maybe make for a better ending for the film. It would give gravitas to Harry’s sacrifice, instead of ending a bit like a romcom. This is a personal take, and it’s an issue with the original of course.
