I watched the four hour pro-TLJ cut and had a great time! It definitely feels like 3 Star Wars movies jammed into one, and I took a break in between TFA and TLJ/TROS, but overall this is not a bad way to watch the sequels. I really like TFA, I love TLJ, and I hate TROS, so this was a good ratio of each of these movies' runtimes.
The TFA section felt a little rushed, I think maybe 10 minutes could have been added back in, but I really like the Hosnian system being the final battle and the rathtar scene being much shorter. Slimming down TFA also highlights all the character arcs set up by JJ that Rian really delved into with TLJ: Rey's obsession with her parentage over being a Jedi, Finn's lack of interest in the Rebellion, and Poe's recklessness when it comes to war. The TLJ section was my favorite, not only because that's my favorite of the sequels but it's made even better with cutting a lot of Canto Bight (Finn and Rose I love you but it was sooooo long) but you still get Finn's arc about learning to fight for something greater.
The TROS section is definitely for viewers that have seen it before and just want to watch for completionists' sake, as a loooot has been cut out; characters are disappearing and reappearing at random (Leia seems to die from Padme Amidala disease which I guess is poetic in a way), plot points are assumed without any explanation, and it's all over in about an hour. However, this was by far a more pleasant experience of TROS than the theatrical version. It's telling that the entire Pasaana and Kijimi arcs are completely removed and we lose virtually nothing about the plot. Sad to see Finn sidelined so much but they did absolutely nothing with him in the original so I can't blame this edit for that. I disagree with the premise that the Sith can just Be Defeated Foreverâ„¢ by Rey but I like that she's a nobody doing it at least. Thank you for removing the terrible kiss and letting Kylo's death feel more important. And finally, I really really really love adding Chewie, Finn, and Poe on the ship at the end. They drove their friend to Tatooine so she could bury the Skywalker family, and now they're off for more adventures! I love that idea and I got genuinely emotional watching it.
I really like the first two sequels and the last one for me is unsalvageable so I'm not really the target audience for this edit, but I still had a good time watching it, well done as always!
