Synopsis:
A lighter edit of The Phantom Menace than most, removing only the worst of Jar Jar's antics and Ani's acting and trimming the podrace a bit.
Intention:
As I've grown to enjoy the prequel trilogy more for what it is, I decided it was time to make my own edit that kept the film more intact with only minor trims.

This is the phantom menace as I remembered it, only now Anakin and jar jar are a bit less annoying; I never had anything against the political mechanics of the prequels or the midichlorians, so seeing them still here while most of the other Fanedits try to reduce/delete them is a welcome plus.
The only thing that prevents me from giving this edit a perfect score is the lack of reintegration of some deleted scenes, mainly the probe droid that Qui Gon slashes in half, which explains why he and Anakin are running towards the ship... Otherwise, it's a very good edit, making the movie more streamlined and less annoying

This is probably the best edit of Phantom Menace I've seen. I watched V2 and absolutely loved the 35mm print! Such a cool thing to do! It blends the CGI with the practical sets and locations extremely well. The CGI no longer pops out too much like in EP 2 & 3. Catferoze does an excellent job at trimming lots of annoying things here and there. All the video and audio cuts are perfect. Yet, not too much is cut at the same time. All the great action is still there. I like that the streamlined version of the planet core sequence is still there. Midiclorians are still present, but it never bothered me as much as other people. The only negative about this edit is the pace could be quickened during the Coruscant section in the 3rd quarter of the movie. The movie really slows down there before finally picking back up for the climactic battles. The Coruscant section could probably be trimmed 4-5 minutes. Spence's edit does a great job at this. But overall I think this is the superior edit. If this version would have released in 1999, it would've had a much more positive legacy I think. Great work!

This is my favourite version of The Phantom Menace. I've generally found that conservative fanedits require me to take much fewer narrative leaps and the less work I have to do to enjoy a movie the better it is for me. There are still problems with The Gungan City and the planet core, but I feel like they're essential to introduce the Gungans before they join forces with the rest of Naboo later.
90% of Lucas' original intent is still here, with just simple trims to some of Jar Jar and Anakin, making them more tolerable (I should say I never really had a huge issue with Anakin's portrayal in this film - particularly compared to the other two prequels). Jar Jar (and the other Gungans) still have issues, but without making him an almost mute character who has no reason to be there - or replacing all of his dialogue - there's not much more a faneditor can do. It's quite similar to Octoroxx's edit, but with a few additional cuts to reduce silliness further.
I've always thought The Phantom Menace's use of more practical locations made it the best looking of the prequels, and the 35mm version of this is a lovely way to watch the film. It's a less contrasty look that includes scratches and grain - it doesn't look perfect, but it feels so authentic. Definitely my preferred version, but for those who prefer a crisp picture with deep blacks and no scratches, V1 of this cut uses the blu-ray source and looks great too.

This is a very conservative edit of The Phantom Menace. The worst excesses and redundancies are excised or muted (one 'yippee' remains). Most of the Gungan City and 'Planet Core' sequence is intact with minor trims for pacing. The most annoying of Jar Jar's goofy antics have been either removed or trimmed. The Chosen One prophecy, Virgin Birth, and Midichlorians remain, for better or for worse.
With time (and since viewing the Sequel Trilogy) I have gradually warmed to what George Lucas attempted to do (and its 'rhyming' with both Episodes IV and VI) and have been more forgiving of how different Episode I is from the Original Trilogy, so I must say that I enjoyed this edit very much. If you wish to enjoy the original film with slightly less cringe, this edit is a good choice.
