Synopsis:
Goal:
• Remove as much unnecessary exposition as possible. The last time something is explained, it’s the only time.
• Removed Enchantress Hip-shaking, connect her plans to the larger DC universe
• Less Joker focus and dialogue
• Reveal the team organically, without introductions
Intention:
We finally got the Snyder approval, but have been less hopeful for the Ayer cut lately, so I decided to take a look, and ended up with this edit.

In my typical fashion, exposition gets cut drastically. The last time something is explained, is hopefully the only time it is. My intent is to leave some mystery and suspense, and not everyone needs to be a main character. I didn't know these characters besides Harley before watching, and that is the perspective I maintain. Slipknot is simply a plot device, not a main character.

Also, Enchantress is a horrible villain, so I have removed as much of her dialogue as possible to make her more menacing implicitly, and removed as much hip-shaking as possible. Hopefully this puts the movie focus less on her and more on the growth of Harley, Deadshot and Flag, the real main characters. Most of the Joker dialogue is removed when possible.

Scene sequence is also adjusted in the first half to better introduce the characters organically.

Subtitles for Enchantress and Incubus have been replaced with a focus on building a beacon to alert Apokolips.

Though it may sound like damning with faint praise to call this edit of Suicide Squad "astonishly coherent," anyone who has seen the original cut will know that Wakeupkeo has worked a bonafide miracle by forcing this movie into somehow ACTUALLY MAKING SENSE. The editing on the original film is some of the worst I've ever seen, introducing over a dozen characters while ping-ponging around in time and space, and asking the audience to buy into all the magic, super-science and political paranoia of a half-baked grim-and-gritty superhero cinematic universe. The beloved Suicide Squad comic worked and was subversive because it was built on the foundation of nearly 50 years of superhero tropes and back story and continuity. The film adaptation was working from a couple of bleak Superman movies that established a tiny corner of what is apparently a world filled-to-overflowing with superpowered beings, most of whom are psychotic (and not just the bad guys).

Original sins of the concept aside, Keo has worked a great deal of magic with the flow of the movie, and while certain aspects of the Flagg/Enchantress storyline are unavoidably tied to jerky time-jumps, so much of the movie has been streamlined that it is possible to discover anew the virtues of the film, from inventive villain effects, to clever sequences, to some surprisingly deft and fun characterization. Thanks to some very canny subtitle-tweaking, the film even manages to fulfill an important plot function within the larger DCEU.

My only real complaint about the edit itself (and one I'm surprised to be making) is the lack of Jared Leto's Joker. While I'm glad that his annoying and derivative characterization of "Mr. J" has been shortened and largely relegated to Harley's mercifully brief flashbacks, his quest to track down Harley seems interspersed with the main narrative in a slightly haphazard way and felt like it needed a bit more massaging to pay off properly when Joker tracks her down. As it stands, I don't recall it being completely clear what Joker's goal even is until Harley starts getting texts from him.

In all though, one of the worst superhero films of the century has been rescued to a form that is remarkably enjoyable, occasionally moving and certainly sits well alongside one's DCEU fanedits of choice, not to mention the excellent James Gunn follow-up.

I definitely enjoyed this edit over the original in terms of pacing and moving the story along and basically everything else. Like I would have rated the original 5 out of 10. And this I would rate this 7 out of 10, only because let's face it editing can only do so much and it wasn't going save this story/screenplay. So it went from a movie that I did not want to see again to this isn't so bad and I'd watch it again.

Now, I was never a huge hater of the original version of the Suicide Squad (2016). I recognized all the movie's problems, but watched it and had my fair share of fun with it. However, that one time at the movie theater was pretty much the only time I watched the movie. Never had a huge desire to rewatch it. This edit and the good reviews made my reconsider. Plus, the Ayer cut is still in the unreleased form, so... why not?

In short? It is the better version of what people got in 2016. Does it make it a good movie? No. It's still and average popcorn flick. The edit tries its damnest to smooth the rough corners of the inconsistent mess that was. It succeeds 100%. However, the movie has fundamental issues, which can not be edited around. So, in short, that is the go-to version if you ever decide to rewatch the movie, or if you decide to watch it for the first time even, but do not expect it to be some brand new experience, that will drastically change your opinion

Techincally wise it's great. The cuts are seamless, the sound is solid. There were a few moments where you feel the cut, but for 95% of the movie you don't. As someone else said, I would prefer all the pop songs to be cut as well and changed to some more neutral soundtrack. It would fit the whole narrative better

Joker is almost completely gone, and, unsurprisingly, his scenes don't add anything to the movie and that edit shows that he could've been easily scrapped altogether. Then again, I am one of those who think that Harley Quinn goes with the Joker, so you got to have him, even in that little capacity that he was in the edit. That said, Joker scenes in the original added some wildcard element to the original story, which made the whole thing more engaging. Here, being as brief as they are. they feel out of place. Like, we need to set up Joker's attempt at rescuing Harley, so we have to leave some scenes in

I highly recommend this edit, but expect the similar movie from 2016. Don't get your hopes up, that it is the unofficial Ayer cut that turns the theatrical cut on its head. It's not. But it's good on its own and does the best it can with the content it had to work with. I love that it's called 'Special Edition'. Simple, effective and truthful. Instead of some pompous naming, it went with the straight one. So, temper your expectations accordingly

I joined this site for the sole reason of requesting this particular fanedit. I watched the theatrical release in the theatres, I watched my Blu-ray of the extended cut and I simply couldn't face watching this movie one more time. Until Wakeupkeo.

It's been a good long time since I've seen the flick so I can't make any really accurate observations about the difference between this edit and either previous release. I can say that I enjoyed myself a bit more during this watch. My impressions are that the edit has the character moments of the extended but the overall story is streamlined and has much better pacing. The video and audio edits are absolutely flawless; I detected no glitches or weird audio moments or anything even remotely distracting. Just perfect work.

Wakeupkeo has taken a very flawed movie--my least favourite DCEU flick that I've seen--and made it better. Glad I watched this.

As part of Wakeupkeo's Bad Movies Made Less Bad series of edits, this one keeps the win streak going. There are other reviews that dive deeper into detail so I'll keep it short...

Was the original movie an unwatchable train wreck? Yes.

Is it now a watchable and technically well executed fanedit of said train wreck. Yes.

Do I like it any better now? Yes... sorta... maybe. I will say without the hard work of Wakeupkeo, I would have never given this movie a second look.

Fan edits have become an increasingly popular way for cinephiles to reimagine and improve upon their favorite movies, and "Suicide Squad: Special Edition" is a remarkable testament to the creative potential of this burgeoning genre. This fan edit, created by Wakeupkeo, presents a fresh take on David Ayer's original film, delivering a significantly improved viewing experience that captures the essence of what made the concept of the Suicide Squad so enticing in the first place.

From the get-go, it's evident that a great deal of care and effort has been poured into this edit. The pacing has been meticulously tightened, resulting in a more streamlined and cohesive narrative that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish. By trimming excess scenes and rearranging certain sequences, the Special Edition successfully addresses some of the pacing issues that plagued the original release.

One of the most commendable aspects of this fan edit is its focus on character development. By giving more prominence to individual members of the Suicide Squad, their motivations, backstories, and personal journeys become more tangible and relatable. This added depth allows viewers to connect with the characters on a deeper level, investing us emotionally in their arcs. It's a testament to Wakeupkeo's skill that they managed to achieve this while staying true to the spirit of the original material.

Furthermore, the Special Edition features refined visual effects and skillful audio editing, elevating the overall technical quality of the film. These enhancements contribute to a more immersive experience, ensuring that fans can fully appreciate the world of the Suicide Squad in all its gritty glory. Wakeupkeo's attention to detail is evident throughout, resulting in a polished final product that demonstrates their dedication and passion for the source material.

However, it's worth noting that while this fan edit significantly improves upon the original release, it does not completely eradicate all of the film's shortcomings. Some issues, such as the uneven tone and certain plot contrivances, still remain. Nevertheless, the Special Edition succeeds in mitigating these flaws to a considerable extent, making for a much more satisfying viewing experience.

In conclusion, "Suicide Squad: Special Edition" is a shining example of how fan edits can breathe new life into existing films. It showcases the creativity and talent of Wakeupkeo, who has crafted a version of the movie that fans of the Suicide Squad franchise will undoubtedly appreciate. While not perfect, this fan edit offers a captivating and improved take on David Ayer's vision, and is well worth exploring for both fans of the original film and those looking for a fresh perspective on the Suicide Squad's cinematic journey.
