Synopsis:
For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Order have protected the galaxy. Now, the Galactic Republic is stagnating. Greed and corruption has consumed the senate, and the Trade Federation has struck at this opportunity, invading the small planet of Naboo. To resolve the conflict, rogue Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and his young apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi step in to aid the young Queen of Naboo. Along the way, they encounter a vergence in the Force, but little do they know, a shadow from the past is rearing its head, eager to unleash its wrath....
Intention:
I originally started working on this replacing the footage of Shadow of the Sith by L8wrtr which is my favorite TPM fanedit with the Flash's 1080p English & Regraded version of TN1's Czech scan of the 35mm film reel, which imo is the best looking version of the film.

Shortly, however, I started playing around with the transitions, adding back some things and cutting others, until I realized I'm making my own version of the Phantom Menace, enough in my opinion to warrant its own individual release.

Editing Details:
The main goals and changes in this edit are as follows:

1. Implement the best ideas of all past edits of The Phantom Menace while bringing out the strengths and the core themes of the original film.

2. Maintain continuity with the larger Star Wars canon.

3. Use the best looking and sounding version of the film.

4. Maintain a more balanced tone between silliness and seriousness.

5. Tone down Jar-Jar Binks without making him pointless, getting to know him as an everyman and even allowing him to be a badass in the final battle.

6. Keep the visit to Otoh Gunga, bringing a sense of wonder and emphasizing the theme of symbiosis.

7. Keep tensions and risk of failure high in the final battle.

8. Bring out the best from a mixed bag of dialogue, performances, and directing.

9. Respect the mythos of Star Wars.
Cuts and Additions:
- New crawl, with the title "SPECTER OF THE PAST" and text mimicking Hal's from Cloak of Deception with some tiny alterations (it's a great crawl and I didn't know how else to improve on it!)
- Color corrected the film at certain points to my liking.
- Cut "As you know our blockade is perfectly legal."
- Cut "What? What did you say?"
- Cut "Are you brain dead?"
- Cut short the scene of TC-14 serving Qui and Obi tea.
- Cut Qui-Gon naming the gas as "Dioxis".
- Cut "They must be dead by now. Destroy what's left of them."
- Kept the droids talking to each other for two scenes, the first instance and the hangar--the rest are cut. What can I say, I enjoy the "Roger, roger". ("Uh oh!" is cut though)
- Cut a lot of Nute Gunray's cowardice ("What is going on down there?!", "Well, no, but, uh...", "This is impossible!")
- Cut "We will not survive this.", and "They are no match for droidekas!"
- Cut "It's Queen Amidala herself!" "At last, we are getting results."
- Cut "We would never do anything without the approval of the Senate"
- Cut short the end of the communication scene.
- The throne room scene is rearranged and trimmed to the barebones. I originally cut it completely, but I decided to add it back for two reasons: Pacing, and the information that Naboo has security volunteers and no army.
- Cut "Ooh, mooie mooie I love you!"
- Cut "More did you spake?!" and "Exqueeze me!"
- Cut "The bosses will do terrible things to me..."
- Silenced Jar-Jar's yell as he jumps into the water. (kept the jump and "Yousa follow me now okeeday?" for a clean edit).
- Slightly recolored the Otoh Gunga section as Flash's regrade looks a bit too yellow there to my eyes.
- Cut "Meesa back!" "Yousa in big doodoo this time!" and "How wude!"
- Retained Obi-Wan's warning about symbiotic relations--L8 said it was unexplained and has no payoff but I completely disagree--It's the theme of the whole movie and the payoff is the finale, the "symbiosis" of the people of Naboo.
- Cut Boss Nass's blubbering. Moved "They not know of ussen" to later for a clean edit. Cut "Da Naboo think they so smarty. ..."
- Cut the "planet core", now they are given a fast way to Theed via underwater. No sea monsters, it's a distraction.
- Kept the conversation about why Jar Jar was banished (Cut "This is nutsen. Ooh! Gooberfish.")
- Cut the Theed palace stairs scene.
- Cut "Yousa guys bombad!"
- Cut "That won't be a problem." Qui-Gon doesn't dismiss the droids as not a threat. (How are we supposed to feel tension?)
- Kept the line about the Federation needing the Queen to legalize the invasion in place of the removed palace stairs scene.
- Cut "Either choice presents great danger..." Baaaaad acting Keira... (or Natalie, if that's your voice dubbed over.)
- Cut "If you are to leave, it must be now." The Queen quickly realizes what she needs to do. (You might argue the little look over to Padme implies approval, but the line is meaningless anyway.)
- Cut "Coruscant" repeat and "Uh, that doesn't compute. Uh, wait, uh..." The droid tries arresting him immediately.
- Cut Jar Jar's antics in the hangar bay.
- Cut Ric Olie's Captain Obvious moments.
- Cut "We're losing droids fast!"
- Unlike L8wrtr's edits, Darth remains a Sith title. It must be an OT assumption that older fans respectably wished to keep, but as someone who grew up with KotOR, The Clone Wars, and other Expanded Universe and Disney Canon materials, I was never bothered, and this also helps keep canon continuity with them. The recent Obi-Wan Kenobi show also seems to have remedied the point of contention older fans had, namely Ben Kenobi calling Vader "Darth".
- Cut "No more commands from her highness today"
+ Added The Droid Auction from the original Star Wars soundtrack upon first entry into Anchorhead, playing through to Anakin's first appearance in time for the Skywalker theme.
- Cut Jar Jar sticking his tongue out behind Qui-Gon. He still says "hmph" and continues to look around though.
- Cut "You're a funny little boy."
- Cut "What, you think you're some sort of Jedi...I'm a Toydarian...only money!"
- Cut away from Jar Jar to hide what he's doing. Added sounds of his clumsy antics for the background.
+ Replaced Jar Jar's encounter with Sebulba with the deleted scene Anakin's Scuffle with Greedo. Added the appropriate subtitles and format. ("Well Ani" is cut as the new placement of the scene doesn't allow Qui to know Anakin's name).
- Removed one of Anakin's "very"s from "Sandstorms are very, very dangerous".
- Cut an awkward moment in Anakin's house where everyone talks at the same time (super awful directing).
- Cut "He's a protocol droid to help Mom" and "oops".
- Added a line from TCW to explain 3PO's backstory: "I was once protocol droid for the entire..." Great idea from Hal9000.
- Cut "How wude!".
- Tightened the pause before "No one can kill a Jedi".
- Cut "I don't want you to race it's awful I die every time Watto makes you do it." (Who talks like that?)
- Cut "But mom, I love it!
- Cut Padme's reservations about trusting Anakin. Her relationship with him is kept positive throughout the film.
- Cut explanation that Anakin smashed Watto's pod in the previous race.
- Cut the dialogue about virgin birth.
- Cut the other kids joining in. Cringy and unneeded. Kitster is implied to have joined later by himself).
- Cut Jar Jar's antics while fixing the podrace.
- Cut "Patience, my blue friend." Racist much?
- Cut Jar Jar's exaggerated reactions to Sebulba and Qui and Watto's deal.
- Replaced 3PO's line about spaceships with "I hope never to end up on a mission of that nature." Again great idea from Hal9000 that keeps continuity with the previous line change. (Also cut "space travel" from his previous line so he says "Oh my, sounds perilous!"
- Mostly mimiced L8wrtr with the podrace sequence with some minor differences due to lack of footage (look up theatrical vs. home video changes for TPM). So no extra scene with Anakin and his mother and the engine power up shots were replaced with some of the other racers getting ready. Also there were some severely damaged frames so I reinstated Aurra Sing looking over and watching the race. Jabba the Hutt and Tusken Raiders are still cut. Finally, I cut Sebulba surviving the race, so his fate is left a mystery and an implied fairytale-esque demise.
- Cut "You have brought hope to those who have none." Bleh.
- Cut "You mean I get to come with you in your starship??"
- Cut "I don't want things to change" WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WERE LITERALLY A SLAVE
- Cut Anakin's farewells to 3PO.
- Cut "I can't do it mom, I just can't do it."
+ Moved Maul's probe looking for the Jedi and attached it to the deleted scene of Qui-Gon cutting it down before running with Anakin to the ship.
- Cut "Tell them to take off!"
- Cut the scene with Nute Gunray and the governor at night.
- Cut "You seem sad" and Padme's response (bad writing).
- Ended the scene at "my caring for you will remain".
- Cut Ric Olie being captain obvious again and Palpatine's dramatic look at the camera.
- No scene with Anakin and Jar Jar following the Queen and Padme, we transition straight from "The situation has gotten far more complicated" to Palpatine's office (this is mainly due to a lack of footage, again a difference between the theatrical and home video versions).
- Trimmed the political jargon in the office. I don't mind the political talk as much anymore personally, but it has to be trimmed for pacing, especially because of the rest of the edit being breakneck at this point. Also, side note, what kid is going to understand any of this?
- Cut any mention of midichlorians, force conception, and virgin birth at the council scene. I added an AI cloned line to Mace Windu saying "You have spoken before about the prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the Force" to replace the existing line "You refer to.." so the conversation about the boy transitions to the prophecy far more naturally.
+ Added "Tales of a Jedi Knight" from the original Star Wars soundtrack while mentioning Anakin, the prophecy, and the Will of the Force.
- Trimmed the senate scene to get to the point, but maintained a natural flow of dialogue. Ideally it'll feel like a short interlude to the senate like in the Clone Wars, rather than a slow meeting.
- I added back the "Vote now! Vote now!" chants from the theatrical version/DVD as it always made more sense and fit the visuals better.
- Cut "I miss her." Odd line delivery.
- Cut "Gungans get pasted too, eh?"
- Cut midichlorians once again. I completely get and appreciate the themes of symbiosis implied with the midichlorians, but not only do they demystify the Force, hurt its universality, and lead to some of my least favorite aspects of modern Star Wars (M-counts, Force cloning and all that), but with the virgin births and force conceptions all gone, its existence in the movie is rendered basically pointless.
- Cut "weesa going hoooome!" and added some R2-D2 beeps for a better audio transition.
- Kept Ric Olie giving Anakin a piloting lesson. Yeah I know, Ric Olie memes, "You catch on pretty quick" but, I think it's a sweet moment and it strengthens how Anakin can pilot a Naboo starfighter so well at the end, which is what I intend to do like L8, to make it so he intentionally and not accidentally becomes the hero at the end.
- Cut "Do you think they have been taken to the camps?" "More likely they were wiped out." "Mesa no tink so." "Do you know where they are, Jar Jar?" Pacing.
- Cut "Uh, h-hello dadee, Big Boss Nass, Your Honor."
- Cut "Yousa all bombad."
- Cut Boss Nass' over the top laugh and his blubbering.
- The rest of the third act basically mimics L8wrtr's Shadow of the Sith, maintaining tension and a risk of failure in the finale. There are a few changes.
- Jar-Jar using the battle droid stuck in his leg to fight is kept, as I've always found that badass (muted his scream as he ducks under the laser blast to make his movements more intentional. It's like he's found his mojo in battle.)
- I've also kept Jar-Jar toppling a large droid tank--I think that's genuinely funny.
- The resolution is closer to Hal's edit, moving some of the lightsaber battle, while still maintaining the tension until the end, so Qui-Gon's final words lead to the ending.
- I kept the final "Disney Main Street Parade" as L8 puts it. With the "happy" version of Palpatine's theme in the background, there is a bit of unease behind the parades, while also paralleling episodes IV and VI. (Trimmed Jar-Jar's antics in the parade).

Another excellent edit of Episode I, fascinating too to see a version based off an unofficial print scan.

Watched the smaller file version, technically all fine except for the expected film damage and what appear to be a couple of glitches, the most noticeable being the audio dropping briefly at 1:09:17. The source trades sharpness for original detail, but the quality actually helps the blending in of the two (in my view) essential deleted scenes.

My personal favourite is still probably seciors' Return of the Sith: Revisited Edition though, there are a few scenes missing here that I like and few present that I think need not be. I do think the decision to keep the visit to the Gungan City makes sense though, rather than being introduced to the civilisation at the end of the film. Just goes to show how variable people's tastes are!

Thank you for bringing the audio error to my attention, that is most probably a rendering error, I will fix it as soon as possible.

Specter Of The Past is the most recent definitive viewing experience of TPM's original vision, in shortening the movie and reintegrating the closest high quality source of deleted scenes, "Specter Of The Past" becomes a breezy run-through on the origins of it's most beloved characters; it still is the phantom menace, that could never be replaced inside of the quality of the film itself, but the editing and flow of the movie are marginally improved here, moreso than on the shadow of the sith cut mentioned here as a source of inspiration, I can't even seem to recall what was left on the cutting room floor because it's clear intention is to reduce the awkwardness and stillness of the original, to only leave it's strongest parts with a brisk clean pace, don't get me wrong the film now clocks under two hours so it never has time to leave you wanting more or waiting for more alike the original.
