Synopsis:
Art the Clown is back in Miles County causing all kinds of havoc and insanity, this time setting his sights on a pair of siblings.

This time it’s a whole lot shorter.
Intention:
-My main intention of this edit was to get the film around the 80-minute mark just like the old 80s slashers the film has clearly been inspired by.
I just got bored during the original runtime and for what? In my humble opinion slasher films shouldn’t be above the 90-minute mark, a lot of films shouldn’t.
-Cropped the entire film to 1920x900
-Replaced the entire score mostly with music by the legendary John Carpenter, some Tangerine Dream.
-Removed most if not all scenes of the brother character by himself. He’s now a side character instead of a main character with a needless subplot.
-Removed all mention of the father character, they quite literally spend half an hour yapping about him I’m not kidding. This needed to go for me.
Release Information:
Digital
Editing Details:
Davinci Resolve to edit.
Cuts and Additions:
-Want to point out there a lot of new songs and tracks in this edit, Not everything is listed here because I just lost track of the tracks.
-Added John Carpenter’s Alive after Death over the opening.
-Removed the scene or Art in the morgue, yes, it’s a cool scene but it doesn’t serve any purpose for me and just halts the story even more.
-Added Orphan Egg to the first kitchen scene.
-Removed scenes of the brother looking up Art online and seeing things from the first film.
-Removed scenes of Sienna and her mom talking about that there might be something wrong with Jonathon.
-Shortened the scene of Jonathen coming to Sienna for some superglue.
-Put the laundromat scene right after Sienna says that the miles county clown is probably far away from here to have a funny monster squad / Night of the creep’s joke.
-Removed the one fella waking up and not being able to see the little girl, didn’t really like this.
-Added a song to the laundromat scene.
-When Sienna is watching Tv add some fun horror films. A Return to Salem’s Lot, Texas 4
-Added A Nightmare on Elm Street’s main theme when Sienne transcends into the dream.
-Remove the annoying nun in the dream sequence.
-Added Abyss to the dream sequence.
-Have Sienna react to the fire in her room quicker.
-With the fire aftermath scene removed most of the dialogue, keeping things silent for the most part.
-Added Track 7 of the Keep soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.
-Removed the little girl watching the tv and seeing footage from the previous film, we know what happened, no need to rehash it all again. Instead, she watches a horror film.
-Added Weeping Ghost to Art making his weapon thingy.
-Removed scenes of Jonathan at school doing school stuff.
-Removed the scene of Jonahtan discovering Art and the little girl playing with the possum, I found it hard to cut a scene with Art since it’s pretty funny but the brother subplot is just something I want gone. If it meant sacrificing a good scene so, be it.
-Removed scene of Jonahtan at home and his mom talking about the stuff at school
-Removed Art and Allie meeting up in the Halloween store to delay the scare of Art being there for Sienne, she scares, and we scare.
-When they first meet in the real-world Mannequins from the Tourist Trap soundtrack plays.
-Cut Art going after Sienna, locking the door, grabbing his bag, like what are we doing here this takes so long and gives us nothing back.
-Stopped the intercutting in the Halloween shop, it’s now one scene.
-Removed the gag with Art and the decapitated head pretending to be a mannequin, it’s funny sure but it’s almost a minute long.
-The scene with Sienna and Allie in the grocery store is now one scene as well.
-Added the People are Strange to the grocery store scene.
-Instead of some news broadcast thingy Sienna is now watching Stage Fright
-Added Keys from the Hitcher soundtrack to the scene of Art Trick R treating.
-Shortened the scene of Art Trick r treating.
-Removed the scene of Sienna and the mom talking about what the brother did at school.
-There is this other subplot going on about the sibling’s father being somehow connected to Art. And Sienna being some sort of chosen one who will kill art. I really, really disliked this as it took out a lot of mystery. Art in my opinion shouldn’t have lore or backstory or something. He should just kill and be an evil clown. That’s what I want out of these films.
-Added The Dead Walk to Sienna dressing in her Halloween costume.
-Stopped the intercutting in the bedroom scene with Sienna’s friend, it’s now one scene.
-Replaced the music of the Halloween party with Nuovo Testamento - The Searcher
-Cut down a lot of the Halloween Party, it just really drags. Also removed the meeting of Sienna Jeff to make it so that they already know one another.
-Removed all dialogue from the scene of Art giving candy to kids, not sure why I did that just preferred it like this, the dialogue to that scene doesn’t add anything at all.
-Continued with my quest to make the mom be more friendly, this is also done in her final scene.
-Shortened a lot of the car scene to the carnival, that scene was going on for so long.
-Also removed the other end of the phone call, we don’t know what’s happening.
-Added Are you Alright to the car scene.
-Added the Naughty Ghost to Sienna in the carnival.
-Added Dust in the wind to the car scene with Brooke and Jeff.
-Added I’ll be there for you during the dick stabbing scene
-Added I ran so far away right after
-After I ran ends we transition into Carpathian Darkness.
-Removed the post credit scene
-Added something funny to the very end.post

This was quite the undertaking and Samael Lynch has a great eye and ear! Very talented editor and a creative edit.

Audio / Video Quality Score: 7

While this is an OUTSTANDING encode with no blocking, banding or other artifacts, the blacks are too crushed, while this might be attempting to emulate the look of Terrifier 1 (it had vintage 80's crushed blacks in dark scenes). This looks more like late 90's crushed blacks taken to an extreme, so much so that often Art's eyes are not even visible. The black crush in Terrifier 1 mostly affected backgrounds. This edit also has jumpy frames / frame skipping that happen throughout (likely because the ripped file was converted to mp4 by a program that messes up the variable framerate settings and/or because the framerate is at 24 fps when the original release was 23.976).

Because this was a complete musical score replacement, there are times where dialogue gets very thin and tinny. This is the trade off necessary to accomplish something this ambitious. Some moments are left without a score and the audio artifacts are even more evident there. I didn't take any points off for this, since it's the best that can be done with the tools currently available.

Audio Editing Score: 6

Several instances of jarring audio moments, dropouts, music often being way too loud in the mix, and dialogue intermittently being hard to hear is what lowered this score.

Visual Editing Score: 8

No major issues here. Deduction for a few moments where visual splices did not quite work 100% resulting in wonky camera movement.

Narrative Score: 8

The editor achieves their goal of score replacement. A fellow editor once told me that my own score replacement sometimes fit the scenes "too well." And to a small extent toward the end of the edit that might apply. Overall a great ear for an alternate score that really works!

Enjoyment Score: 8

Overall I recommend this edit for someone who would like an alternate viewing experience with new music and score. The fun factor is raised by funny additions like Katy Perry to a bloody murder rampage.

Detailed viewing notes:

WARNING!!!!! SPOILERS BELOW:

SPOILERS!

Great ear for the new musical scoring!! It's just way too loud and doesn't match up with the original music volume, making dialogue sometimes too hard to hear. This occurs throughout the edit. Nightclub scene was especially hard to hear what they were saying.

The grunge overlay in the opening visibly fades out. Would be less noticeable reducing it over a few cuts between shots.

Nice job on the opening credits.

Dialogue in opening kitchen scene is muffled by the new radio music.

Nice new placement of the laundromat scene right after Sienna's line about the killer being far away! Good narrative change.

7m 30s, absolute dead silence. Even in movies with "silence" there is still noise.

Screen replacement on Sienna's tv is done well but second movie she switches to has choppy frame skips.

Much better music in Clown Cafe but the scene still drags, especially in this much tighter edit.

Beginning at 21m 5s all hallway ambience reverb cuts in and out during Sienna's lunchroom conversation.

22m 54s Sienna's line "It was pretty bad" has a brief delayed echo effect.

23m 22s "In a few weeks" dialogue splice not smooth.

23m 40s Sienna's says something strange happened then suddenly we're cutting to her but in a new scene. Felt fan edity.

24m 30s the new sfx horror voices added here are so darn LOUD.

25m 4s small click/pop on audio clip splice

26m 49s cutting out the cashiers line and splicing Art's antics together makes for some wonky looking camera movement.

27m 8s audio splice not smooth

Nice smooth removal of Art locking the door to the shop! More effective this way!

Effective jump cuts as Art is loading his junk onto the cashier's desk. Nice way to emulate the director's style.

Having the attack on the cashier as one continuous scene is very effective and done well.

Cool transition from Sienna opening a door to her friend opening the door for Art (who is trick or treating).

Nice way to cut out the friend opening the door for Art a second time!!!!!!! Masterful fanediting.

32m I was confused as to the significance of the new tv scene Sienna's watching. Maybe something more disturbing would have warranted her facial expressions.

33m 44s music transition not smooth; it suddenly cuts off.

35m 12s I know the music cuts off suddenly for dramatic effect here. But doesn't feel like what would have been in a studio production.

35m 19s weird downward camera pan (another spliced clip?)

Katie Perry "now put your hands up" lol.

The first pause and then resumption of Katie Perry music was good. But doing it again when the mom comes in doesn't really have the same effect anymore.

Having only music over the kids getting candy from Art didn't really work well, especially the hand smacking part.

42m 6s, audio completely drops out to silence. The scene was quiet but it sounds off.

43m 39s dialogue splice "I put molly in your drink" is not smooth.

46m 16s sounds like the music got spliced here or something.

Great new transition from Art shooting the mom back to the club scene!!! Much better!!

The music in the club immediately goes silent when Sienna starts screaming. That doesn't seem plausible.

52m 22s very odd music shift here. Totally different vibe. Jarring.

After Katie Perry made an earlier killing scene feel funny and lighter, doing the exact same thing again with the Friends Theme song with the peeing boyfriend didn't work for me this time around. Toward the end started to feel like how many songs can we cram into this.

We jarringly switch from the Friends Theme to a Flock of Seagulls.

59m 39s Flock of Seagulls just abruptly stops and music score starts. Jarring.

59m 48s quiet pop/click

1h 3m 37s Art splice not smooth as he creeping toward the brother. He disappears and reappears a few steps ahead.

1h 3m 54s pausing Art standing there was an interesting idea. But the end result doesn't look like something in a professional studio cut.

1h 5m music as Art attacks the brother with the knife seems like filler music that doesn't fit with the vibe / action.

1h 5m 43s how the score starts again the exact same same time as the shot switch to Sienna makes it feel like a jarring transition.

1h 7m 26s the brother's mouth is making noise but there's no sound of it

1h 7m 51s the transition into the new musical score here is not smooth

1h 14m 3s Sienna's cough is abruptly cut off

1h 17m 1s quiet pop/click

Sienna in water tank changed to black and white was done very well with the added grain. I don't personally prefer it this way, but it looks good!

The new score is really interesting, the theme of the film improves a lot.
The intro song is a banger. Also, the editing of the intro section is brilliant; in horror films, many times “not showing” is the way to go.
Nice idea regarding the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” theme, it doubles as a cool Easter-egg.
A main character (the brother) becoming a side character… It’s well executed in the edit, and now Sienna is the focus; her character arc and the actress’s acting are also miles better.

The changed colors in the dream section work really well. The psychedelic colors blend perfectly with the psychedelic score.
The first time Sienna sees Art live is… wow. Brilliant score choice here; it’s delightfully spine-chilling. The dream scene and this section were the highlights of the edit for me.
When Art is “paying” for the Clown Horn, great editing here as well.

“The Naughty Ghost” was an ingenious song choice. And I laughed way too hard at “I Ran”, it was very funny.

Issues:
-- I’ve noticed a lot of noticeable drops in the video framerate, lasting up to 0.5 sec. Including (but not only) at 0h6m25, at 0h10m32, at 0h11m14, at 0h12m19, at 0h13m01, at 0h21m35, at 0h22m44, at 0h23m18, at 0h25m10, at 0h25m40, at 0h28m26, at 0h29m38, at 0h30m12, at 0h33m40, at 0h53m03, at 0h59m58 and at 1h02m44.
These look like rendering issues; they should be easy to fix. But they happen, like, a lot…

Overall, I really wanted to give it a higher score, some moments were absolutely brilliant. But the video problems have to be addressed. If these are addressed, this edit can easily become an immediate shelf-replacer.

Edit 16/06:
- I’ve watched the editor’s latest version, and all the audio issues appear to be fixed, so I updated my score accordingly.

What can I say about this? Not much except it "brings" me back to the early 80s and the slasher film of that time. I remember going to see many titles back then where my friend and I usually were the entire audience or like 2/3 of it. I find the Terrifier movies big on gore and low on budget. Just like in the 80's. I like the pacing of this and will be rewatching a few times. Especially come Halloween time. My play list is growing. This brought back and gave me more WTF moments which made me smile and laugh. Is there something wrong with me? Anyway as usual no techie stuff here from me. Just on my enjoyment scale, this gets a 5 out of 5 popcorns. And I have a new respect for garbage bags filled with rusty tools...............

Perfect for anybody who loves this film, or just wants it to be a one off sequel. It perfectly rids subplots leaving it as a stand alone sequel to Terrifer. I love it.
It's fun, fast paced, and still gory as hell.
It's a very good addition to my frequent rewatch edits. I'm so happy with it.
Much love to you my friend.
Sincerely your viewer,
Juggy

Ok, holy cow. This was so, SO much fun to watch!

EDITING: The color choices were creepy and interesting, way more so than the bland, washed out original. The music was inspired and incredible. At one point I literally chuckled to myself like "this is genius!" I mean, seriously, go listen to the original music after you watch this edit and you'll be absolutely bored. The new music improves the movie so much. There were a few small issues that are keeping the audio from being a perfect 10 (slightly-too-loud over some dialogue and one imperfect transition) but I will happily upgrade this to a 10 as Samael has mentioned that they're working on fixing the issues.

NARRATIVE: Cutting the morgue and moving the opening with the costume-making to much earlier were great choices, and really set the tone for the 80's grindhouse psychedelic horror feeling I got throughout. The story is tighter, the movie feels fun, and you would be hard-pressed to tell me a good reason why the original needed to be an hour longer. Without the constant useless dialogue the movie actually kept the tension going strongly enough for me to get jump-scared a few times.

Overall this is going in my Keepers Collection immediately, and will forever replace the original for me. Amazing work!
