Synopsis:
In a small Oklahoma town in 1964, the rivalry between two gangs, the poor Greasers and the rich Socs, heats up when one gang member accidentally kills a member of the other.

The Even More Complete Novel reintegrates footage left out of the extended cut from the theatrical cut, as well as two deleted scenes not present in either cut, with the option to choose the rock soundtrack from the extended cut, or the classical score from the theatrical.
Intention:
I loved the cute little deleted scenes on the latest Blu-Ray, so I looked into adding them back in, but then realised there were a few little moments in the theatrical cut that could be added back in as well. And then I also looked into the soundtrack differences between the two cuts, and tried to allow for both options to exist, to have the extended cut with as much of the theatrical cut score as possible.
Other Sources:
- SFX from freesound.org (failed match strike, match strike, car drive by, cars passing)
- Ambiance tracks (high school, suburbs at night)
- The Outsiders: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Country Suite, Incidental Music 1, Deserted Church Suite)
- The Outsiders: TV Cut - This version of the film includes the extended ending with the courthouse, and the brothers in the park, but with the classical score, some of this was used in the edit where possible)
- Elvis Presley - Hound Dog (Vinyl Rip, so it meshes more with the film's audio track)
- The Outsiders: The Complete Carmine Edition v2 by RickBandit76 (His version of the courthouse rescore was used here, with permission)
Special Thanks:
RickBandit76 for allowing me to use a portion from his amazing Complete Carmine Edition edit
Release Information:
Digital
Special Features:
- Extra Unused Deleted Material (0:35)
- Bobson Introduces The Even More Complete Novel (Mini-Podcast)
Cuts and Additions:
- Added new score to the end of Ponyboy and Sodapop going to sleep
- Added Dally, Ponyboy and Johnny going to a diner and blowing straw packets until they get kicked out
- Added Dally, Ponyboy and Johnny going to a drugstore, and causing a milkshake based distraction to steal cigarettes
- Rescored both previous scenes with a vinyl-rip of Hound Dog by Elvis, and a piece of incidental music from the Carmine Coppola score
- Added scene from the Theatrical Cut of Ponyboy and Johnny looking at their reflections after cutting their hair
- Added 2 short scenes of Ponyboy and Johnny trying to catch a rabbit and playing poker while trying to pass time in the church
- Replaced church fire rescue with the theatrical cut, due to it being a longer

With some films you just want to spend more time in their ambiance, "The Outsiders" is certainly one of them. This is the third time I have seen it in any form, after "The Complete Novel" and CoolGuy209's "Let's Do It For Johnny!" and it's probably the version I'd turn to again by virtue of having both the longest runtime and the option to listen to Carmine Coppola's music.

While the pop music certainly is used effectively in many scenes, I found that the "Complete Novel" re-scoring would often undercut the emotions of others, leaving the viewer more detached from the action. I watched "The Wanderers" recently and had similar feelings, but since that is a less melodramatic and nostalgic story I think the choice works better there. Didn't notice anything amiss at all, transitions to the re-integrated scenes were unnoticeable.

The one thing that I do miss is the colour scheme from the old Blu-ray, In my opinion the film could be considered a spiritual successor in some ways to "Rebel Without a Cause", and I think that it benefits from the warmth and saturation lost in the recent remaster; at the sunset scene around 58 mins in for example, the colours described don't match the characters' descriptions as much now. This is certainly not the fault of the editor though, and it would be a major job to try and combine the best attributes of the different transfers!

Thanks Bobson for putting this together, guess I someday ought to read the book, and maybe try the theatrical cut!
