Synopsis:
Thor Love and Thunder arrived in cinemas to the sounds of raucus laughter, and the sound of footsteps as people walked out of the cinema, disgusted at what a blundering fool Thor had become. Whilst many people enjoyed Taika Waititi's unique blend of humour and emotion, There are many people who felt he had taken it too far.

Thor Love and Thunder Minus Comedy takes the worst of the comedy out and aims to focus on Thor's emotional journey, rediscovering love and accentuating the threatening presence of Gorr the god-butcher.

Thor discovers that Gorr is aiming to kill all gods and sets out on a mission to raise an army to rescue the abducted children of Asgard. It's not yet clear how this army will come about but on the way, he meets the enigmatic Zeus whose allegiances are never quite clear, and rekindles a romance with Jane Foster who has her own secrets.
Intention:
The plan is to remove the worst of the comedy and allow the story to breathe. There is actually a lot of quality in the movie, it's just completely undermined by the puerile humour. This edit takes out the worst bits and tries to leave the movie more on the level of Thor Ragnarok. The focus is on Thor. Some Jane scenes are removed to support this.

The theatrical cut was messy and full of poor attempts at humor (and screaming goats, for some reason).. This edit does a great job at trimming most of the cringe out of this film, and greatly improves it. Makes me wish the theatrical cuts of MCU movies had editors who cared as much about the story as Tremault seemingly does.
I loved how Gorr's story and motivation are clearer, how we discover who the Mighty Thor is together with "our" Thor, how we discover that underneath her facade - Jane actually is suffering, how Sif now actually talks more like a true Asgardian, and many, many more changes.
Not everything is perfect about this edit, of course. The source material was full of quips and jokes, so trimming them leads to some continuity issues (e.g., location changes, props disappearing) and pacing issues (hardly any time to breathe).
All in all - most of those issues did not bother me too much. There were only two things I wish would be altered if Tremault plans on creating another version of this edit:
(1) 41:50 The use of November Rain feels very out of place. I think there's no need for anothe GnR song in the movie - and especially in this scene. I would replace it with some instrumental piece from the OST..
(2) 1:05:20 I understand there's no way to completely cut the scenes in which the kids gain powers, but if there's a way to further trim some of them (i.e., if there's a kid fighting without Thor in the frame) - trim it.
Keep up the good work!

For the record, I have never seen Thor: Love and Thunder (I have seen the previous films). Every now and again I choose to make a fanedit my first experience, as I find it interesting to just go in blank sometimes and without familiarity bias. That being said, I had seen one or two clips from the thread and I also knew that Korg was going to be "actually" dead, when previously he was a talking head I think? And I knew that there was some kind of character change for Zeus, but I didn't have full context.

NARRATIVE

First off, it's clear tremault put a lot of work in here, and I do admire that. The opening montage seemed like a good way to open the film and was really only let down by some audio stuff (more on that below). I haven't seen the original, but my friend said that the opening scene with Christian Bale played out much better.

Unfortunately, I found most of the viewing to be a bit of an odd experience. I see from the description that tremault wanted to allow the film to "breathe" but I'm afraid that doesn't really come across. Instead it felt very rushed and choppy. It's my understanding that the original film maybe has this problem anyway, but I watched this with someone who had seen the original cut and they said they were having trouble following and basically having to remind themselves of what context was cut.

Why is Natalie Portman now Thor? There doesn't seem to be any explanation for this, which felt to me like a pretty big hole. Korg is dead, but events surrounding that are still lighthearted even if humour has been excised. In fact, one of the really odd things about this edit is that you can tell everyone is playing things "tongue-in-cheek" except there aren't (hardly) any jokes. So it just comes across like everyone is acting really strangely. This changes a little in the second half - events seem to take a darker turn and become more action focused, but by this point I kind of felt like I was coasting along just accepting events as they happen. I didn't understand why there was significance to this weapon for opening this gate... Why the bad guy was going to make a wish to some statue. There's a scene where one minute Thor and the others are talking, and suddenly a child's head just appears on screen and Thor teleports to where they are to chat to them. This all happens so quickly and it's very confusing.

Possibly the most bizarre change is what's done with Zeus. Reading the intent, I think Zeus is secretly helping Thor? So the visual trickery here is quite well done but it just isn't clear what's happening. My friend was completely thrown by it and I had to pause the film to give them context - they, who had seen the theatrical film, and me who hasn't seen it giving them context... because I'd caught some context from what I'd scanned from the project thread. That's not how it should be and fanedit narratives need to hold up for someone who doesn't have the context of the theatrical cut or details on an IFDB form.

But let's say it works and the audience has clocked onto Zeus helping Thor psychically - why does Zeus then kill Thor's friend Korg? Why does Thor immediately jump to kill Zeus? And why is he excited about having done this? I'm afraid I just don't see the logic. I also don't see how the segment is relevant to anything else that happens in the narrative.

QUALITY

In regards to the technical aspects, the visual quality is mostly reasonable considering the file size, but personally I think it's at the lower end of what editors should be putting out. Unfortunately, the opening titles and closing credits dip lower than this and have visible compression artefacts.

The audio quality skirts the line of decent throughout and sometimes does not hold up well. Perhaps this has just gone too far on the compression end, but in some cases I think it's clear that a lossy source has been used and broken up under compression. Some added audio elements are clearly of a lower bitrate, so these poke out and break apart where the main film audio fares better, revealing some changes. The opening montage, for example, features a song that sounds to me like the source was possibly a lossy mp3 and the S's at the end of lines are quite piercing as a result of what I assume is further compression.

I personally think that far too much quality has been sacrificed here and it reflects negatively on the edit. It's not always possible, but whenever it is, we should be using lossless audio sources. These are much smaller and more practical to work with than lossless video files and it really make all the difference. Rendering at a higher audio bitrate also doesn't add much onto your file size when compared with visual compression.

VISUAL EDITING

While the general editing style comes across choppy, in terms of the more "fancy" stuff - transitions, special fx - there's some great, creative visual editing here. The likelyhood is I probably wouldn't have noticed some of it, but there are a couple of things I saw from the project thread and I thought they were nicely done. I also very much appreciate tremault taking the time to include subtitles. I'm a big advocator for that these days.

AUDIO EDITING

Quality of added elements comes under this umbrella a bit, and I'm afraid that the weakest moments of the edit were pretty much any rescoring work. The music is generally well balanced in the mix, which I don't often find, but because of the audio quality and incomplete sound design, the scenes just aren't sold. Rescoring is hard. It requires a lot of time, effort and patience. If you're doing it in surround, it's very demanding. This edit is presented in stereo, which makes things a touch easier. But the reason it doesn't work is simply because it sounds unfinished. Random dry sound effects poke through what is mostly a music-dominated mix. This is not what you expect from a film mix and it just immediately tells me "oh, this has been rescored" and I'm taken out of the edit. Aside from key sound effects like sword clashes, punches, etc, you need to add back ambience. The sound of weather, the sound of a crowd, footsteps, shuffles, grunts etc. The brain notices when this stuff is absent and only music is playing. Often it's the sounds that you don't think about; the kind that when you listen, you don't think you can hear them, but if you were to mute them in the mix, you'd know something was missing. It's also important to add the appropriate room sound to sound effects so they aren't just leaping out of the mix bone dry.

Some montages might be the exception to this rule. The opening montage in this edit could maybe get away with not having all the sound rebuilt. The issue is tremault decides to rework select sound elements for select scenes, so it's inconsistent, and again comes across weird on the ears.

Putting aside rescored elements and one or two other moments, there were significant portions of the edit where the audio flowed smoothly and went by unnoticed. I imagine there were a lot of cuts made to the film, and so I would guess there was a lot of good work on transitions throughout. Excluding rescoring, it was typically the audio quality and visual cuts that let things down.

I do often try to give timecodes but if I'm watching with someone else I don't like to ruin their experience by constantly pausing the film to make notes. Hopefully what I've mentioned is context enough but I did go back to get a timecode for a particular moment that stuck out as needing more work:

- 47:57 - 48:02 - this doesn't work at all IMO. I can hear the audio crossfades and the visual cuts are abnormally quick. The shot of Korg's head is also very odd and somewhat in poor taste considering he is meant to be "actually" dead in a serious way in this edit(?). I don't think the segment adds much narratively, so personally I would just cut from the kiss to 48:02 ("guys we're here").

ENJOYMENT

It was difficult to enjoy the film because it was difficult to follow the film. The noticeable compression on opening and closing titles and limited audio work for rescored elements was also a distraction. Personally, I was not a fan of the music choices for the beginning and end of the edit, but that's subjective.

It's worth bearing in mind that I'm a musician by trade and am used to needing to be picky about audio. I also watch edits on some relatively expensive gear, which does tend to highlight faults more clearly than on your average device.

Thank you, tremault, for letting me watch this. It's clear that a lot of work has been put in, and I do admire that. It never feels good posting a negative review (especially when going against the crowd!). I always strive to be honest when I give feedback though, and I think that is the best way towards building a better community and helping us all improve on this hobby of ours :)

It is difficult to receive the low scores but I appreciate your honesty and you gave some fantastic tips. The scene with Zeus helping Thor was a necessary evil to foreshadow Thor being able to give power to the kids, as without that, the film was suggesting Thor was on the level of Odin and it didn't track for me at all. As you can probably understand, this was a very difficult task and I had to gauge how much work I could put into it before getting overwhelmed. It is a learning experience for sure.
With regards to the sound, unfortunately I struggle with it, as I have to wear earplugs at home due to mental health and undiagnosed probably-adhd. Hopefully one day I can have a much better approach to sound.
I am sorry it's spoiled your enjoyment of it though. It is important that people enjoy it as you are giving me your time with this and I've let you down. I'll try to do better in future.

Tremault had some serious work cut out trying to remove the comedy from this deeply awkward entry in the MCU but has largely succeeded in crafting something watchable and actually quite moving here. The brutal arc of Jane Foster throughout the film no longer feels undercut at every possible turn (particularly as death is elsewhere treated as something reversable and comic in the original cut of the movie -- looking at you, Korg). Some of the fixes don't entirely work (the dream sequence cutaway with Zeus is a valiant attempt to trim the middle of the movie's bloat while still retaining important exposition but I'm not sure it quite succeeds). There's also just a few instances where the re-editing is apparent due to some lapses in editing grammar -- a number of characters are shown for the first time without any proper introduction, not given a name nor even a character establishing shot. Valkyrie in particular appears first as part of a group shot where normally she would be at least visually shown to stand apart from her subjects. Granted, not necessarily an easy thing to accomplish given the mess of the original film, but some kind of visual orientation is needed when introducing key characters in a text.

Nitpicks aside, this is such a vast improvement over the original version, and with some revisions, this could easily be a seamless replacement for the Thor 4 we got. The potential is there to be one of the most moving entries in the MCU -- if only Taika Waititi had had tremault's good judgment for emotional story beats on hand in the editing room!
Owner's reply March 05, 2023

Thanks for the great feedback! editing grammar is a new term for me but I totally understand what you're saying. I hadn't considered the introduction of valkyrie and I should have. I'm not certain where such an introduction could have fitted in though. perhaps a shot in the intro flashback... definitely something I'll keep in mind for future projects!

A viking god, a stand-up comic
What in common could there be?
If answer "nothing" you did,
You are smarter than Waititi.

Hammers, axes, goats, and gods
Have hearts to fall in love.
If 3 of those 4 sound silly to you,
You'll be happy to lose the above.

An edit of story, a change of tone,
This film needed much more focus.
Was it possible to make lead into gold
Or had Taika finally broke us?

Cuts galore! Chop! Chop! Chop!
This now runs mercifully short.
Farce, schtick, and mockery are gone
It's a film of a different sort.

The music was grand, the effects superb,
Though the drama is lacking here.
With acting and plotting so muddled
I never came close to shedding a tear.

The Guardians are gone, Avengers are dead
Can Thor ever just be Thor?
Now with tattoos, daughter and pet goats
The answer is "no", he's a bore.

Thor 5: Adventures in Portlandia
Is still where this franchise will head.
No edit can reform Marvel's story
Which will probably end up with him dead.

But casual fans will here enjoy, though those hardcore will still find fault
There are limits to what can be amended in this excellent effort by Tremault!

If there's a big issue dragging down the MCU as a whole, it's the excess of comedy. Along with the frequently formulaic plots (interestingly averted on TV, with shows like "WandaVision" and "Loki" daring to experiment a bit, but the theatrical releases still cling to the formula) and the overabundance of CGI, this is what consistently keeps these movies from becoming anything beyond fast food entertainment. Even the best ones in the franchise suffer from an obligatoriness of shoehorned jokes, almost as a recipe that can never be varied. And it comes across as the makers not trusting their own material, feeling the need to mock and lampshade it non-stop as in trying to save face and apologizing for making something so "silly". For a deeper essay on this, I recommend the already classic YouTube video "What Writers Should Learn from Wonder Woman" by Just Write.

The unfortunate result is that we, the viewers, can very well miss that under all the jokes there may be a pretty good story after all. The official cut of "Thor: Love and Thunder" did very little for me. It felt both unengaging and unengaged. It was like watching all the worst parts of "Thor: Ragnarok" (which I liked a lot) without any of the best parts. So, this edit was an eye-opener. Once the silly garbage has been removed (or toned down - fear not, there are still some jokes there, it hasn't been turned dry), the story reveals itself to be actually pretty good, and touching even. Dear Hollywood: themes of heroism, loss, love, grief, pain, self-worth and such, need no tongue-in-cheek approach. Let stories be sincere. A sense of adventure is all that's needed in order to keep it from being overly sad. That, not cinematic self-mocking.

A tremendous job of distillation that more than making a silk purse out of a sow's ear, removes the sow's ear to reveal the silk purse that was buried underneath. Technically it's excellently executed as well, the new effects are completely seamless, and the recreated credits sequence is impressive.

I wish the official MCU approach was closer to this overall. Highly recommended.

This is an amazing fan edit, I really think this improves the original film, there are sitll some changes I am for or against (will dm about) but with what you were given this is a spectacular retooling, that may not fix everything but certainly makes it feel more like an appropriately toned yet fun film.

I really like what you did here, and if I pick up more marvel movies on Blue-Ray, I'll check out your other edits!!

There are aspects of the original Thor: Love and Thunder that I enjoyed but the "comedy" (if you'd like to call it that) made it almost unbearable. Everything we'd seen in the past of Thor's character arc, with his mourning, his humility, and declining mental health, had all been thrown to the wayside to make room for an at times childish Thor and cheap, middle school humor. Unfortunately, I think there's very little any editor could do to try and resurrect any sort of character or story progression from the atrocity that is Thor 4 but Tremault's edit seems to smooth out the ride of the original trainwreck and that's definitely worth some praise.

Purely based on personal preference, there are parts that I would've liked to see remain in this cut, like the falling glass temple, Thor's (admittedly lame but funny) slow glide into screen when Star Lord looks at the Guardians and the absurdity of Zeus (which, I think, actually fits given the character). Not all comedy was bad comedy in the original, the majority of it was though. Ultimately, this was a MUCH better version than the original and I'd 1000% watch this before watching the official release. Thanks, Tremault!

After the success of Thor Ragnarock, director Taiko Wattiti and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth were riding high and given cart blanche to do whatever they wanted for Thor Love & Thunder. The plan was simple; make the best Thor film ever. The reality was that we got the worst Thor ever, but that's where tremault steps in....

Thor Love plus Thunder minus Comedy; is editor tremault's rendition of the events of the film and if you are lucky enough to see it for yourself, you will agree that this should be taken as the defacto Thor Love & Thunder Experience going forward.

All the jokes that don't work have been cut, all the bizarre character moments', all the dumb Thor moments', all of it has been cut. Thor Love plus Thunder minus Comedy; gets right to the point and moves at a break neck pace. Part of this is because tremault has expertly cut out the filler and drives ahead with the story. This edit illustrates that when you take away the noise, the original story isn't half bad! The other reason for the pacing is because the original film had so much nonsense in it that when you cut it; the film easily looses a great deal of its run time I can only imagine how hard this edit was to achieve and from a technical standpoint; the editing is seamless, audio, visuals, everything, its all seamless.

There were a couple of editing choices tremault made which were ambitious given the material she had to work with. Both which which kind of work but because of the way the original scenes were shot, is a mix of of inspired but a little awkward. I applaud the editor for making it work at all, given how poorly composed and illogical the the original sequences were, but it was a thrill to watch from an editorial stand point.

Despite if whether what I've written above here sounds negative or not, rest assured this edit is genuinely awesome.
It takes a bad film and actually makes it alright. It is still the weakest Thor films but it at least it's now fun and can be taken seriously now. I have no doubt that if tremault had access to the original footage that she would have been able to do an even better job as this film would have been extraordinarily hard to edit. This version could pass off as the genuine product if it weren't for the foreknowledge of having seen the original.

I would highly recommend you watch this.

When I first watched Love and Thunder, I couldn't finish it and had to put it down. When I stumbled across this edit I figured it was worth a shot to try again. From the edit starting montage/narration and the beginning battle I knew this edit meant business when it came to cutting out unnecessary comedy. This version of the movie is far more tolerable, and shows the potential that was behind the film and helped even out the tone between the God Butcher and the rest of the comedic shenanigans.

I mean it got rid of the screaming goats, what more could you ask for.

Tremault - I am shocked by how much better you made it.
I'm a big marvel fan and I wrote this movie off as just being too dumb to watch again. You cutting out all the cringy & lame comedy really brings the heart of the movie out.
Thanks for working on it and I will save this version as the one I watch
