Synopsis:
My first fan-edit deserved a new look since the original movie was finally released at a considerably higher quality on Blu-ray in April of 2020

As an avid golfer, there are some great golf moments in this movie. There is unfortunately an over-the-top “80s romance” too, which hasn’t aged that well. My editing goal is to focus on the golf.

In this new version, Molly is edited to be “less damsel-like” and seems smarter, more confident. And the golf gets the highlight it deserves with this new upgrade to the film quality.

When I was preparing the cover art, I found an awesome set photos with a monotone color grading that has a cool blue tint. I loved the way the photo felt classic and special. The set photos felt almost “Rat Pack” cool. I love the original movie and especially the new HD release, but the overall color saturation and obviously dated technology made it feel dated as well IMO. So I dove back in and tested an idea.

Personally, I love the new “cool blue noir” look. The footage feels more timeless, and the old technology isn’t as distracting. The fashion looks less distracting too, allowing to focus on the golf.

Both the "Timeless" B&W version and the original color version are available.

“the only two DVD editions (released in 1997 and 2009) made use of the same source material, a dated master created back when laserdiscs were still being produced. Not surprisingly, Warner Archive's new Blu-ray marks a huge improvement; it's sourced from a recent 2K scan of the interpositive and looks great with strong image detail, plenty of visible film grain, and a pleasing palette that showcases Tin Cup's sun-baked locations. Warm earth tones are prominent with plenty of room for vivid greens, which are richly saturated but show no obvious signs of bleeding. As usual, the disc is well-authored and runs at an extremely high bit rate while completely avoiding compression artifacts, banding, and other eyesores. Overall, this is a very tight and stable image that, while clearly looking like a product of its time period, is so far beyond previous home video releases that die-hard fans will be thrilled.”

TLDR: Fantastic edit that I didn't know I needed!

As part of Wakeupkeo's Bad Movies Made Less Bad, I'm not sure this movie actually fits into that category. I liked the theatrical cut quite a bit and didn't think it was bad by any means. That said, this edit is so much better.

Technically, as other reviews have already pointed out, there are a couple/few hiccups. Nothing drastic for the most part but the ending just doesn't quite work. I get the idea and it seems good on paper, but it just doesn't flow well. I don't know if it would actually work but what about... Keep the "going back to Texas" after the tournament but cut the Romeo/Doreen tango. The couch scene dialogue naturally takes us into next year's tournament as we pause on Roy's face saying "nah". Cut to black with ZZ Top song starting and fade up to sweeping tournament scenes. The announcer introducing the tournament (probably pull from TV broadcast). Cut to Roy on the golf course (something like 126:53 of your cut). You could then add the tango scene back in as a credits extra. Of course this all sounds great in my head, but not sure how well that would cut together.

So back to the movie... The story telling and pacing is so much better IMO. It really is a case of less is more. While the theatrical version spoon feeds us the romance, which we already know is there and ultimately distracting from feeling Roy's journey. The focus of this edit is where it should be and because of that, it feels so much more powerful. I had a much, much bigger reaction to Roy making that shot in this edit and ultimately that is the whole point of golf and this story. You don't remember all your games whether good or bad, you don't remember how you've grown as an athlete or person, but you sure as hell will always tell the story of when you made that one incredible shot.

This is another solid fanedit by Wakeupkeo. I personally hope he gives it one more go to smooth out a few things and rework the ending. Thanks as always for sharing your hard work Keo!

Ps. The black and white version is a subtle triumph that is not immediately obvious. Sure the movie is beautiful in color, but taking that color away makes you focus even more on the story. It brings a timelessness aspect to it that I really appreciate.

*EDIT: Fixed the editing issues and jarring press conference scene!!! Thank you for all your hard work!

I remember liking this movie a lot as a youth but upon watching it with my wife we both agreed this wasn't a good movie. This edit brought back that enjoyment feeling I had as a youth! It shaves the rough edges much like the tv edit (which is what probably made it enjoyable).

There is an editing issue at the rv, qualifying match & waffle house scene were it dips to black and white for a moment and I agree with another reviewer that the transition from the press conference is rough. The music feels wrong too with the ending scene. I'd be curious to see if it could be cut further; shoot for an hour thirty [CUT] rv after therapy, press conf., the shanks.

In conclusion, if you like golf, want a better tin cup or just curious give this a watch!

Wakeupkeo has done a brilliant job of making Tin Cup be a movie I'd happily rewatch again. The colour grading in the timeless B&W version which has that blue noir look is the best choice that was made- loved the look. A good change was having the romance have less focus, making Molly be much more smarter and confident and removing the sex and nudity. The only minor nitpick is around 1.26.55 instead of a cut to black maybe a fade to black would've worked better. Otherwise fantastic edit overall didn't notice any other issues, editing was all seamless, colour grade was fantastic and it was really enjoyable to watch. Top job Wakeupkeo.

Loved Tin Cup originally and Wakeupkeo has done an excellent job of bringing Golf to the Fore (sorry) in this edit.
The romance is still there in the background, but it's the golf and the machismo that gets full billing in this edit.
A couple of continuity moments did not distract me and did not diminish the story. A very nice edit that's trimmed the story to avoid the romantic drag on the narrative. Well done Wakeupkeo.
