I love the hilarious spoof 80s Horror/Sci-Fi/Action TV show 'Garth Marengi's Darkplace' but I always wondered what it would be like to view it without any of the mock interviews which make up a quarter, to a third, of the runtime. Then I also thought it would be nice to make a movie-length edit of the remaining material.
Intention:
To cut together all the non-interview material from the 6 episodes into one long narrative. I wanted to make the joins as seemless as possible without removing large parts of the show (As it's all comedy gold) but let's be honest, it's still fairly episodic. Which is why I called this edit "Tales From The Hellmouth" in a nod to similar anthology horror films.
I've presented this as if it was a lost 16mm film version of 'Darkplace'. Maybe Producer Dean Learner cut the TV episodes into a movie to show in one of his "Gentleman's Cinemas", in an effort to squeeze a few more quid out his investment. To further this fun idea, I've added a cinema style introduction as if it was a low-rent 1980s British cinema release. Plus there are trailers, previews, adverts, an intermission and I've even created a little tribute to a certain infamous Peter Cushing Horror movie, which I call "The Darkplace Break".

- I wanted to preserve as much of the material as possible, while also trying to make this into one semi-seemless whole. So I've hopefully struck the right balance.
- The material has been presented as a vintage Grindhouse movie, but not slavishly. So I've kept obviously televisual things like the superbly cheesy opening titles, monologues and establishing shots.

Brilliant stuff. Works just fine, arguably better in some places, without the interview sections/commercial breaks. Great cover/disc art too. TM2YC continues to be just an endless supply of quality edits and top-quality aesthetics to go along with the films.
If you're showing Darkplace to the uninitiated, I'd even recommend showing them this version first, and then hitting them with the original "commentary" version. There's plenty enough hilarity and action here to satisfy a first-time viewer entering Garth's... DARKPLACE.
In short, watch this edit or you'll get a knuckle supper.

Only seen the series once before and it's been a long time. My brother is a big fan and so I burnt this to DVD to watch with him when I went to visit recently. Naturally, he loved every bit of it. I enjoyed it a lot too, and because it's been so long since I saw the original series I couldn't tell where the interview segments used to be.
Narratively, it's very episodic and doesn't flow like a feature film, but it's a fun alternative to the original and works surprisingly well. The interval was entertaining and very well done as were the various other additions at the beginning and end of the film.
Editing was pretty much seamless as far as grindhouse goes. The nature of the style makes it hard to tell what's intentional. Video and audio was good as I expected them to be and the DVD menus were simple, but well presented. Love the poster art :)

'Darkplace' is set in a place down my neck of the woods. The dark bit. Yea.
Such a treat to find this on the down low a while back before finding this community. Going for another rewatch and thought I better just pay my respects to the FE, TM2YC. Deleted scenes. Streamlined plot. Grindhoused appeal. Exemplar of TV2Movie. Cheers!

I got introduced to Darkplace some time ago and I loved it. It was great from start to the end while also introducing funny characters, story and a concept while being made as a "80's" show that was supposedly not shown to the public which is a funny joke, I might add.
This edit by TM2YC is a great alternative to watching the show. It removes the commentary sections while still somehow keeping a coherent, but weird structure to it's story. The cover made for the edit is stylish and the grindhouse aesthetic is very cool and fits into the 80's vibe of the show. I recommend this edit to those who want to watch a shortened version of the show and find out what Darkplace is and why it gets a lot of praise nowadays. The "commentary" version is also great to watch afterwards. Watch this edit, you won't regret it.

I was so pleased to see an edit of one of my all-time favorite series here! It's not a radical edit, but a nice alternate way of watching without the stories being interrupted. (people new to the series will want to see those interview clips later on as well, though) The intermissions and previews were a fun touch, matching the rough quality of the series. Nice animated menus, too.

This was really great!! I have not watched a new fanedit in a long while, but this one was irresistible. There is no escaping the episodic nature of the source material. Being a viewer and not a fellow editor, I always wonder if there is a way to stretch three story arcs so that they run parallel instead of from one to the next. To a total amateur like me, I always think that would make it less episodic. But it also might be impossible to do. Anyway, in some ways the episode feel is fun in itself. The intermission was really cool as well as the previews and the coming attractions. I really really enjoyed it a lot and will rewatch it. (I was someone who watched the tv show, so I wasn't coming in cold. I wonder what reaction from someone who has never seen the source material before will be?) Anyway, I totally loved it and highly recommend to anyone...anyone who gets this kind of humor.
